Nope, not normal. You probably need new elastic straps. See:

also, be careful lowering the top if the straps are worn (especially if it's colder out). the top doesn't get pulled backwards and folded properly sometimes and you can mess up the motor or even shatter the rear glass window.

a couple times (out of ~400, let's say), my top would go about 3/4 the way down, and all of a sudden, it would "catch," like it got caught on something. sure enough, the top wasn't folding properly and i barely avoided damaging it.

It's the bar that is about half way back that is supposed to pivot backwards. When it does not go all the way back, the top will not lower to it's full position. Occasionally, you may need to give the bar a little help pushing it backwards as the top is lowering if it does not go by itself. This has happened to mine a few times.

Fixing the straps is completedly optional. When I put my top down, I reach up with my spare hand and pull the 2 rear support bars together. As the top folds back, I make sure the front support bar folds back. Goes down the right way every time.

My first top tore on a misfold when the car was <3 years old. Since then, I've done this every time.

Yes, pulling the bar down manually works well. I need to do it on my 06 for the same reason. BTW, the Modifry site is very legit! Gonna buy some straps myself soon.
