Question from Miata owner
Hey everyone. Firstly, I want to say that you have a great forum here, and a wonderful car. Everything I have read about the S2000 is positive. I have yet to test drive one, and am concerned I might like it too much if I did. That could be dangerous...
Anyway, I wanted to ask some of you who have had your car for a while, and who use it as a daily driver: How do you like your car on a day-to-day basis? How is it driving around town, going to the grocery store, going to work, etc? Is it a satisfying ride running around town, or do you feel the need to push it to have more fun?
I am very curious about how you owners feel about your car, now that you've lived with it for a little while. I have a '99 Miata now, and will never get rid of it, but in the event that it gets totalled, or something equally as heinous (Heaven forbid!), I certainly would keep the S2000 in mind as a replacement.
Thanks,
Anthony

I don't use the S2K has a daily driver but when I am driving it, man it is a great time regardless of where you are driving it. I've had people tell me that it is not as hard a ride as they expected. People are always blown away by the power of the VTEC and the sound. And under 6000RPM it will most likely feel like your Miata (never driven a Miata so I can't say for sure). I have a lot of fun under 6000RPM in the city. The car is small so weaving in and out of traffic is easy and there is sufficient enough power under 6000RPM to have fun. Just use your turn signal else you piss people off.
Contrary to popular belief you don't have to redline to have fun in the car. But I will warn you... you will get addicted to VTEC after just one hit.

Oooh. I knew there was something else I wanted to ask. The one thing that bothers me about the S2000 (again, keep in mind that I have not driven one yet) is the digital dash. Is it something that you get used to, or do you find yourselves wishing for analog? Does anyone prefer the digital to analog?
Afriend who drove one told me about the transformation that occurs after 6000. He said it turned into a rocket and pushed you deep into the seats after 6K. Sounds fun...

I use mine as a daily driver and have for about 18 months. My only complaint is that I can't keep the top down in the rain and I live in Texas so the summers get a little hot. As for the digital dash I find it very easy to read even indirectly while still looking at the road. After driving with it for so long now I fell like I have to strain to read the analog guages in my wife's Accord.
I got used to the digital dash. I was skeptical at first also. It was one of the few features I didn't like about the S initially. Digital dash brings to mind video game arcades. But now I am a big fan of it. The digital dash makes perfect functional sense. The number is nice and big so it's really easy to read at a quick glance down. It probably still doesn't look as nice as analog instruments, especially the new Miatas with their chromed white face guages but it makes functional sense on the S. I can't picture the S without the digital dash now.
Yep... that is characteristic of VTEC from what I understand. At 6000RPM VTEC kicks in and it like having a completely different engine.
I love the digital dash. It falls inline with the F1 stylings of the car. It is very easy to read and the tach (the only important "dial" on the dash during quick accelerations) is nice and big. You can easily look down and pick up where you are in the powerband and then get your eyes back on the road. It will also blink when you get to far in the red (noticed I said "when" and not "if"), something that analog dials would have a problem with. At night it dims when the headlights are on and like most cars you can dim it if it is still to bright for you.
One thing you may not like is that during quick acceleration the speedo will lag so you have to use your tach to determine your speed. There are several threads that cover speeds at various RPM on the forum.
And oh... it is very easy to clean.

Before I puchased mine, I kinda thought the digital might be a little too Buick for my tastes but after having owned it for a bit, I love it. You can't beat it's clarity and afterall, all the F1 cars use this type of set up; it can't be all bad. Even if they didn't though, I love the digits!! I don't use mine as a daily driver either but this car is very entertaining, whether you're doing 9000rpm shifts or just cruising around town; enjoying the attention it gets and basking in the enjoyment rowing through the best gearbox on the planet and feeling the gocart agility of it's handling.

Hated the idea of a digital dash when I was thinking about purchasing my S2000 -- absolutely love it now!
I use mine as a daily driver -- for time being -- get another vehicle in the fall. The only problem I have with it being my daily driver is not VTECing constantly -- it does get addicting!!!
I love the Miata as well -- go take the S2000 for a spin -- I think you will be at least equally impressed!

I used to have a Miata, before I purchased the Stook, it remains the funnest car I ever owned, but... The Miata left much to be desired in some areas, most notably power and presence. The car lacked seriousness in any way, which can be a good thing, but can be a "girl" thing as well. I've seen turbocharged Miata's that will kick an S2000's A**, but still look like girls cars. Anyway, I wanted something more masculine, with more power, and more exclusivity (even though the Miata family is very warm). I did not want to break the bank, or spend thousands on exotic car maintenance, and it had to be built well. The S2000 was a natural choice for me, and I've never looked back.
The car is an excellent daily driver, but nothing is as easy to use as on the Miata, the ride is a little more firm, but the car is not as rickity as a Miata.
The digital dash was not on my favorites list by a long shot, but once you experience it...it's beautiful, I wouldn't trade it at all.

I drive mine as a daily driver and don't have another car. It is comfortable. Me and my roomate both work at the same place, the same hours, same lunch, etc... yet I still drive my S to work instead of riding with him. It really wakes me up in the morning, and starts my day like this
It's not all that bad in traffic
