Here is the pattern:

1 3 5
2 4 6 R

So you need to push down and move it to the right past 6th and then down to get to reverse.

When I had a short shifter mine would stick down occasionally and I'd have to pull it back up. It would drive fine with the shifter in the down position though 1, 2, 3, 4... and then when you'd try to go to 5th gear it'd go all the way over to the right, toward reverse. Try to shift to 5th gear, if it won't go in then the shifter is just stuck in the down position. Complain about it, get them to knock a couple grand off b/c you'll "have to get a new tranny." Then get in the car, pull the shifter up and enjoy you're new S2000 w/ a perfect tranny.

^ Agreed. Use it as a negotiating tool.

The shift lever/spring probably just needs adjustment, grease. I had the same problem when I installed my short shifter; it would stick in the down position.

AP1 - Rev to 9k. It unlocks the tranny for the reverse gear. Dump the clutch.

Just playin, lol push down on the knob in neutral (feels almost like a spring), then push all the way right and down. Your shifter should look like it's on an exaggerated angle.

is this for definate? Thats what i thought but the dealer is saying u do not have to. Its a 2001 y reg
Did the dealer just tell you that you dont have to push down or did you see for your self? The dealer may not know much about the car . In other cars you dont have to push down or anything to get it in reverse.

Down, all the way right, all the way back.

Virtually any manual transmission has a similar scheme of some sort to prevent you from grabbing reverse by accident.
