I heard that radar detectors do not work unless you're very close, or sometimes it might not trigger until the radar actually clocks you. Would a V1 have saved me yesterday?
My guess is that the officer was pacing you. When he decided to pick you out of the crowd, he zapped with radar to prove your speed limit, then pulled you over. In that case, I'd say you're just about screwed because cops around me don't pace with their radar on.

I bought my V1 a year after I bought my car. I should have bought it the day I bought my car. I hate driving without it.

The V1 and the 8500 X50 are both excellent. No radar detector can save you every time though.

I have an X50 and it saved my ass just today. I was driving in a tunnel and was enjoying the sound of my exhaust. Limit was 40, I got to the middle of 3rd ~70. The tunnel merges kinda comes back up to ground level and there was a cop directly next to me when the median disappeared. Luckily, the x50 notified me about 5 seconds earlier.

Also got a V1 and been saved numerous times. The car I own now also came with a Blinder M40 laser jammer and from what I've read its a must have if the cops in your area use Laser often.

Give the V1 a try (it has a 30day return policy) and see if it comes in handy

I just received my first speeding ticket too

i was clocked 80 in 65 in the fast lane, the car ahead of me is doing 85+ and so are everyone else in the fast lane. The pig on the bike pulled me for 80, i asked for his record of the radio/clocked speed and he said he didn't have it on.

see if i can beat the house with this...

Could you go into more detail about this? How did you know you were 1200 feet away from the cop when he got you? You mean your V1 went off around that distance and so when he pulled you over, you asked how far he was when he clocked you? Did you tell him that your radar detector picked him up 1200 ft back?
I didn't say anything at all. He motioned me to the side of the road (I was going 18mph at the time, hehe) and took my paperwork, came back with a warning.

I didn't tell him I had a radar detector (though he probably saw it), nor did I tell him why I slowed down, or where I first picked up his signal.

The only reason I knew the distance was because it was 1 block from my house, so the next day I went and measured the distance, out of curiosity, using my bicycle odometer.

I did know it was far enough away at the time that it would be prudent to slow down before I got up to where the cop was hiding.

The only time a radar/laser detector is at a disadvantage is if you are the only one on the road. ie...early morning or late at night or open road.

The detector detects that there is radar and laser being used when it's being used on other cars. This warns you that by the time the radar/laser is being used on YOU, you have already slowed down. So you see why speeding when your the only one on the road has it's disadvantages.

Get a good one. You get what you pay for.
