Rain again
Charlie, Mike
I hear you. As a matter of fact I used to do exactly the same in the rain with my MGB. Just roll up the side windows and keep moving.
Still, I can't bring myself to take the S out of the garage in the rain. It really is a prized possession for me. I waited a long time to by my next sports car, now I don't want to take the chance that it will "melt".

You've got it right. First things first. I have a few years on you, and I too waited. It took me a long time to give in to the urge to buy this car.
I think you're doing it right, I did it the same way. Get the house or the condo. Get financially secure. Then you can baby the car.

Jacko, regarding winter driving: Our roads get really, really nasty up here in Massachsetts during winter. The salt and sand are merciless, the drivers are simply awful, and most importantly the risk of road hazard damage to Neb is too great. My truck gets hit with a barriage of various things every winter that I just won't submit my S too.
The point that the S could actually be a good driver in winter with the right tires isn't lost on me. Xviper and I have had this discussion before, as he's a winter driver in Calgary. Also, I've seen videos of the X-bone frame in collision damage that prove what a good cocoon it is. And the limited slip in the rear with the right tires would be fun. That said, it's the other stuff that deters me. I prize my S too, and I don't want to fear dents / dings / windshield cracks in winter. Also, I'd say the jury is still out on long-term salt damage. Better to just say "no," in my opinion.
