Default It rained in the ride... what's the best...

Alright, I made the biggest mess up possible... I took a nap and left my top down outside (which in Michigan, is a BIG NO-NO). I SWEAR it was about 80 deg. and not a cloud in the sky... I wake up to the significant other saying "hey... you gonna put your top up... the car's soaked". DOH!! This is the second time since I got the ride. The first I was stuck golfing about 20 minutes away, but managed to get back before much damage was done. This time though... Puddles everywhere! I soaked and dried as much as possible... all awhile spilling Terret's like profanities at the top of my lungs! @#$#!!! The car still had that "odor" to it though...

So... what is the best product for cleaning my carpet without getting it detailed. (*I detail it before I put it in storage, but that is a month or two away still). Or just some good deoderizers? And... something to recondition my leather... it seems to be a little more stiff now...

thanks for the help

Treat your leather with a good conditioner each week for 3 weeks and see if that doesn't help. The carpet is another story. I don't know if you can bring it back to the way it was. You may be screwed with that one.

Why not just put the top up every time you park the car? I only leave my top down if the car is in eye sight... and even then I don't. If the sun is shining down on your interior all day it'll really fade it out.

Take the seats out and raise thye carpet. Vacuum as much out as you can and then shampoo the car. Leave fans blowing underneath the carpet untill it is dry.

You may want to use a wet/dry shop vac if you're going to vacuum it out... Just a thought before you have a bigger mess with a soaked bag in your house vacuum.

Why aren't the most helpful little Bee on the internet tonight... Gee, great thinking there Hawkins... If I didn't fall asleep, I probably would have thought of the same thing. I RARELY leave my top down, unless I'm only going to be an hour or two. I live in a safe neighborhood... so other than freak weather, it's ok to do that.

Do you have a good Leather conditioner to recommend?

same... what kind of a shampoo would you use... (obviously not Pert Plus...to beat the smart arses out there to the punch!)

I agree with this and the use of a wet/dry shop vac. The odor is more than likely mildewing carpet. If you don't get rid of the mildew, your car will stink every time it rains or in extreme humidity. I have used a product called Odoban, for a similar problem on some indoor carpet. It worked very well, even though it is a mildewstat and not a mildewcide. Seems like it was purchased at a Sam's club. Apply to a inconspicious small area of carpet first to make sure there is no staining or bleaching. I would leave the car in the sun with the seats out and the top down (watching closely for rain-j/k) all day. I would leave the seats in the sun also, although I would not spray anything on the leather, other than leather approved products. Sorry to hear you will have to put your car in storage. I'll bet the winter drive home will prove boring.

I had a similar situation with my first car I owned as a teen. My driver's side window was broken out one night and it rained, soaking the whole driver's side interior. I ended up stripping the interior to dry and air out the carpet and being only 16, I ended up going to an autoparts store and buying half a dozen carpet cleaning products.

It was a lot of time and energy spent, but at least I never had any issues with odor.

But you might want to make a few calls to some auto detailing places. Someone's got to know the best products and techniques to use in your situation.
