Default Rear Diff replacement: How much should it cost?

Long story short: SUV out of parking lot at high rate of speed, 2 inches from front bumper, then slams on brakes, swerve to the right, avoid the accident, curb swoops up while underneath car, diff and exhaust visibly broken (oh, and of course, SUV driver looks back, sees, jumps median and takes flight *(#$#&*)

Anyway, so I have to get the rear diff replaced (I'm sure) and it obviously isn't warranty, plus I prefer not to report it to my insurance.

I am just wondering what I should (roughly, totally guess if necessary) pay to have the rear diff replaced.

Thanks for the info,
Brandon Cummings

Honda sells a complete differential assembly out of Japan for $1,200 or so (from what I remember). If it's just the housing that's messed up, there are two pieces to the housing. Each costs around $300-$400. You need to identify what pieces are messed up, then get a hold of Trevor at H and A for the best pricing. When I destroyed my differential and two axles, I ended up paying close to $6,000 to get it fixed and some pieces upgraded. So, the pricing is going to vary based on what is damaged and what you replace it with.

For that kind of accident, why not report it to your insurance company (after filing police report for the hit and run). It shouldn't go against your collision or liability coverage, therefore, no rate increase.

With no witnesses, the insurance company will assume that the other vehicle is a figment of the driver's imagination and will assume he is at fault. That's what a guy who works for my insurance company told me (off the record of course, so you didn't hear it from me!!! )

Yeah, no witnesses means it's my word against an insurance company's desire to recoup their outgoing cash: a bad spot to be in. Good news though, got the replacement done (parts and labor) for $650.00.

Thanks for all your input. My car wouldn't be nearly as cool without this board.

Whats wrong with re-opening an old thread? If it is still there... then should still be of use... or get rid of it....

Just internet forum etiquette...similar to refraining from posting in ALL CAPS. Besides, the person you quoted and asked a question hasn't been on the forum in over a year and hasn't had an s2k for more than two years.
