I believe Ford 9" rear diff is quite strong and has been used in drag racing for quite a while. http://www.mustangandfords.com/techarticles/16399/

I seem to recall somebody mentioning thinking about this on their car maybe it was AusS2000 ?

i remember ~2 years ago someone wanting to see if an rx7 rear end would bolt up to our car, since its similar to a miata's, and we use a miata's differential.

I remember that as well. I recall talk of custom halfshafts too since that seems to go after the clutch and diff. I don't think anything came of it tho. Probably an expensive endevour to pioneer.
