Default removing the soft top and motors for weight reduct

My local dealer wants 1400.00 to remove my convertible top and associated motors/hardware. Does this sound right?

nope.

remove the seats and side interior panels and remove the frame bolts on either side of the car, then hammer out the rivets holding the rear of the top to the frame. These are abridged instructions, but the process is NO WHERE NEAR TWENTY HOURS OF LABOR!! I think a competent mechanic could do it in 4.

oh, and I don't look for a spectacualr amt. of power after you remove the top, it's not that heavy.

Well I checked with a 2nd dealer who would do it for 631.00. Apparently the first dealer was quoting me a price for takin it off and puttin it back on. Then the 2nd guy then took off 100.00. i am not looking for an amazing amount of power but I prefer the hardtop look, its warmer/ cooler depending on the time of year, the visibility is alot better and there is less road noise. And it should save around 50lbs. Hey every lb counts at the track.

not worth taking out unless this is a track only car...... or you plan to keep the car forever..... resale would be killed if you didn't have it and 50-60lbs is not that big of a deal on a track if all you are doing is time trials or hpde's....... you would be better off monitoring your fuel and save most of the 50lbs right there.

It did not take me anything close to 2 hours to get my top out.... but I knew that the rollbars were coming out too, so I had an advantage.

Scot what are you doing to your car? I am with you on the top but I prefer it with the ht and i hate to add 48lbs. I can always put it back on. It s definetly not my daily driver.

gerryk-

Why do you want a dealer to do it? Take $60 out of that $500 and buy a Helmsman (if you don't already have one). Remove the top yourself, spend the other $400 on track time.

BTW... are you going to have it out by MSR in November? If so, I'd like to check out your car then. If you're feeling generous, and if it's allowed, I wouldn't mind taking a ride-along, too.
