You'd have more luck with info on an 02-03 top than an 04 top. I'm not sure, it /should/ be the same as the 02-03 top, but I can't gurantee. Other than that, you need modifry's elastic straps and you should be set.

To put it in perspective, just the plastic window was around $300 labor alone. I'd imagine $500 or so for labor to install the whole top by a /good/ upholstery shop.

You always have the option of doing the replacement yourself.
I did it over Labor Day wkend. Used the PDF document and everything went smooth.

Is he selling just the soft-top or the soft-top and frame?

If he is selling the soft-top with the frame, the install is pretty easy. You take apart all the interior plastic panels, unbolt the frame, pull old frame and soft-top out, put in new soft-top and frame, then put the plastic interior panels back on.

If he is just selling the '04 soft-top then the install is a little more time consuming. Just follow the instructions posted above.

Now that I've done an upgrade to an 02-03 top (no frame change) on my 01, I wondered if there isn't a little more work involved if you are swapping the frame+top.

What I mean is all of the rubber window seals sit on adjustable aluminum brackets. When removing these, we score the locations of the screws so that the brackets (and consequently those rubber seals) go back EXACTLY where they were before. Once the new top is installed, it is again water tight. I imagine that if you swapped the frame, you'd have to remove/adjust all of these to make sure you had a water tight seal. Not a big deal, but if you screwed one up you'd find out about it at the next car wash/rainstorm.

Anyway, the top swap isn't that hard to do, but it is very time consuming the first time. If I had to do another one I think I could do it in half the time.

I'm still trying to decide if I should just trash the old top or if there is any market for it (15,000 miles all garaged, but window is a bit hazy... I'd say it's a 5 on a scale from 1-10, 10 being brand new).
