Default Resale value on the S.

I've been reading what seems like tons of posts here lately about resale value. I looked at the "For Sale" section as well and it seems that there a lot of people who are having a hard time selling their cars for a decent price. Some are well below private party pricing and heading toward trade-in pricing. It's been around for 6 years now and maybe some of the reasons are that people who just had to have one now do have one. It's stayed relatively true to the original over this time (a good thing I think). Certainly there a lot of interesting cars on the market that weren't around a few years ago.
I have no intention of getting rid of mine. I paid 30k for it in July of '03 and I think that was a fair price and I was happy to get it. I'd be interested to hear what you think the reasons are as to why there are so many 'bargains' around these days.

if you think we have bad resale, look at the other cars out there.

many have more than halved in less than 3 years. blame heavy incentives, low financing, and the overproduction by the domestic makers.

and Ebay has brought prices down too. IMO this is not the most practical car to have. our 02' camry is not even worth half of what we paid for it. I wanted to sale my 00' and get a new one, but at this rate Im gonna keep it till it dies.

I just acquired a new 2005. The lease residual rate is 59%. That is excellent. Two competing brands -- the 350Z and the Mazda RX-8 are 55% and 50% respectively. I think the Porsche 911, (not Boxster) and the C5 and now C6 Corvette convertible are about the same as the S2K. And those cars start at 10 grand more. Of course the S2K is a very specific automobile whereas the other 2 seaters are a more general sports car/tourer. Incidentally, sales of 2 seaters are down everywhere even as GM is introducing 2 new ones and the MX5 arrives redone for 2006. There will certainly be more to choose from within the S2K's price range. The big ? will be if someone would pay say $25K for a new '06 MX5 or the same for a 2 year old S2K. I don't think the Honda is in any danger of going the Yugo route though.

Well i have a certain philosophy when it comes to cars

I wont buy a new car and watch it depreciate right when it liveas the dealer. Whe it comes to the S I waited a few years until the car had hit its depreciation, looked around on Autotrader, and bought the car cash...no financing

our resale value is not bad. People are just selling over the internet and the prices will be inherently lower because of the additional risk. In my local paper, a MY01 with 33k miles just sold for $22,500 in a week. Now is the time to sell if you are going to, seeing as convertibles bring a premium this time of year. The opposite is true in the winter.

Resale value on Hondas is generally high, and on the S2000 it is very high. Typical prices for cars that are now 4-5 years old are in the range of 60% of MSRP. Of course that is somewhat artificial, because not a lot of S2000s were sold for MSRP 4-5 years ago. Even so, the car is still worth about 50% of what it was typically purchased for.

That is insanely good for resale value on a car.

However, it is a specialty car, with a specialty market. If you are in the position where you MUST sell the car, you may not be able to find the right buyer. In which case, you won't be able to get normal market prices.
