Default Rio Yellow Frame Rails-- What is this putty?

Hi All,

I'm searching for my third AP2. This 06 Rio Yellow I am looking at has gray putty on the frame rails and I'm not sure what it is?

My previous '05 RY did not have this (peeling yellow paint, actually) and other color S2000's I've seen did not have this.

The car is otherwise mint- seller says it is 100% factory, never been modded, painted, etc. Only 10K miles on the clock.

Because there aren't side skirts (frame rails / rocker panels exposed), the gray looks horrible from a low-profile side view.

Thanks!!!!!!!

Are you sure the car has never been wrecked? It looks like the bottom was repainted poorly as you can see the orange peel in the paint.

That orange peel texture is factory on the bottom of the skirt, though the huge and messy overspray shows that it was repainted.

That's either the worst orange peel on Earth, or some sort of coating to protect the car. Where are you located? If you're in the NE USA, I'd say it's some sort of underbody protection junk. Any way you could talk to the original dealer? Could be a dealer "option".

To quote myself and show you guys, here are pictures I just took in the garage of my '05. Never wrecked or painted. That "orange peel" is factory. The overspray is not. That yellow S2000 was repainted at minimum.

My car:

Notice no spray onto the frame rails?

Thanks for the responses I was quite baffled by it. It does look like preventative rust coating. My previous RY also had the overspray and was not repainted (unless it happened by honda before sales).

I was expecting to see frame rails painted to match the "orange peel" textured sides.

It's normal, nothing to worry about. My brand new 09 s2k had that, and so did my used 06. The 06 had less of the "gunk" though, because it had 40,000 miles and the stuff had likely worn off through exposure to the elements.

The grey/ black stuff on the bottom is a underspray to seal the car for northern climates or sound deading most of them have it. My 02 and 03 both have it and have not been resprayed. The orange peel is normal also it is a flex agent that is applied to keep rocks from chipping the bottom of the running boards up.

Mine has the underspray seal too, nothing to worry about. I assumed all of them had it.
