Default Rocks = ouch

So there I am driving along I-35 between Austin and Waco when I here the tick of something hitting the upper portion of my windshield. Don't think much of it until 20 minutes later I see a 3 inch crack in the windshield. Well over the next hour this crack turns into a 12 inch crack. As of now it is approximatly 18+inches long and it is obviously going to spread the entire length of the windshield. I don't even know where the rock came from as I wasn't on anyone's tail.

Will it even be worth it to use insurance? How much is windshield replacement in this car?

I don't know about your state, but here in CA it's about $350 - $400 for a good quality windshield replacement, including new seals. You can get a lower quality windshield and you can have the shop possibly reuse your existing seals for around $200. I don't recommend the latter.

Yeah, I'm definitely not going with the latter route...wouldn't make sense on a 30K dollar car. It's just frustrating lol

Thanks for the feedback

I dont think the cheaper ones are any lower in quality.. The tint on the top costs an extra 30 bucks or so, but thats about it.

I always shop price, since where I live windshields tend to get cracked every 1-2 years, no matter how much you spend on em..

I have MetLife insurance which includes a no dedectible windshield replacement. I've done this to 2 cars without any out of pocket cost. my premiums are competitive so it was added in there.

I had to have my original windshield replaced fairly early on. Long story!

Anyway, the aftermarket windshield with new seals cost me just over $400. If it's any consolation, the aftermarket windshield seems to be a little more resistant to rock chips than the factory version was. Honda seems to use a relatively soft glass. My 2001 Odyssey has a couple of chips in it too.

FWIW!

Yeah, this one seemed to chip very easily. All I heard was a mnor "tick" sound and now I have a crack that is still growing.

I have to call my insurance and see what kind of winshield replacement (if any) coverage I have. I can't remember for the life of me...

If you have comprehensive insurance on your policy, that will cover the windshield replacement w/o any out of pocket expense to you. And since it is not under your collision part of your policy there is no increase in your policy or surcharge after a claim. Windshield replacement is encouraged to help with better visibility and to reduce the amount of accidents.

I just had to have my windshield replaced do to a large meteor that hit it LOL.
I got a OEM seal from Honda part# 73150-S2A-003 and a aftermarket windshield
The windshield came with a green tint total price for replacement was $355.09

Foot note: If you had a windshield banner or aftermarket tint added to your cars windshield the insurance Co. will pay to replace it as part of your claim

I would not suggest shopping for a new windshield by price. The glass manufacturers sell the highest grade windshields (most optically correct) to the OEM's that use HUD's, the next grade goes for all other OEM cars and the lowest grade is used by the cheap shops. The easiest way to tell a good windshield is park in front of a brick wall and look for straightness in the mortar.

Im on my 3rd windshield in 6 months, I got hit by a large rock out of nowhere as well.....The s seems to have a very fragile windshield or I just have really bad luck, but anyways my last windshield with new seals ended up costing me about $380. Im considering bulletproof glass on the next replacement...lol
