Their are two classes:
Prep 1 (stock chassis) and
Prep 2 (tube-frame chassis = not a real car)
The RX8 is a prep 2 car with a tube-frame, 3-rotor, sequential transmission, and dosn't share much atall with its production car counterpart. Heck they even have a Pontiac GXP-R in Prep 2. (Stock they are FWD)
An S2000 dosn't and most likely can't generate enough power with it's engine size restraints. Grand Am dosn't like forced induction and also doesn't seem to want an S2000 even in the ST (lowest Koni Class) class.

As someone else mentioned, very interesting.
I have always wondered what drove some of the rule books. It appears that the manufacturers have a lot of input since they always seem to favor one brand or the other. Maybe Honda's just not interested enough in competition to give their input to any of the governing bodies.
Other than Formula classes you don't see the Honda's much. Any of you who track your cars know the S fares very well on a level playing field, it is just that other than track days there are very few level playing fields to play in.
Grand Am dosn't like cars that are not currently in production to compete. If the car model is 5 years old, its not allowed to race.
If a private team pushed hard to have it in a class (some have), it might be able to compete in ST... but their wasn't enough demand or pushing to have the car compete so it never did...

It became clear that allowing an S2000 to come in and show up some of the other marques was not part of Grand-Am's business plan. Eventually the private teams gave up.
It's possible that Honda could have gotten them in, but Honda seems a lot more interested in establishing Acura as the racing brand (other than in F1). Honda didn't want the competition either.
