Default Roll Hoops- Real...or real fake

So I've been looking through a bunch of posts all ready on this board and have found how to disassemble and re-assemble them but I have a more basic question. I recently purchased a black 2001 S2K and assumed that the "roll hoops" were in fact functional. My question is this: Are the stock roll hoops simply plastic show pieces, or plastic pieces covering metal roll bars? If anyone had clear pic's of the inside of the hoops I'd really appreciate it!

This may not be a nice picture to show the roll hoops insides.....

Picture borrowed from another "burn down thread" on S2Ki.

I saw a pic a while back of an upside down S2000 being supported by the roll hoops. (Same incident that was caught on video of the S flying off a twisty CA road and going down the hill...)
