Default rsx s2k

my honda mechanic said that he is doubting honda's claims with 9000 rpms. he said that he's seen more than a couple blown engines and that he is hesitant to get one because he is scared that the engine will blow. he compared the s2k engine to the rsx 2.0 liter engine. he said that some of the part numbers crossed over and that the rsx only revs to 7, where it should be. besically, he said that the s2k engine isn't holding up the way honda said it should because of the lofty goal of 9000 rpms. now im scared to rev it.

The RSX type S redlines at 7900 rpm. I highly doubt Honda would release an engine with a redline higher than what it could handle. Get a new mechanic

6-9000 RPM is this cars sweet spot! Has your mechanic ever heard of sport bikes that rev to well over 15k RPM?

He is correct that some S2000 owners have had engine failures - some of these attributable to over-revving the engine, some due to mechanical failures of various types. But that's the case with ANY automobile engine no matter what the redline ... as I'm sure that your mechanic is aware .

I'm sure the F20C can rev higher than 9000 (but maybe at the cost of longevity) but to be safe Honda set the rev limiter lower.

People have missed shifts and over rev'd... so I don't think that's any fault of the engine......

Honda were originally aiming over 10,000 - See the early pre-release S2000's.

But they have obviously reigned things in a little (I actually was so anal on this that when I found out I phoned and complained! - In the words of Sunchild WTF was I on???)

Sam.

Red-lined all the time, nothing yet. Bounce off the rev-limiter couple of times, nothing yet. And hopefully Nothing will happen.

B16a in the dels Sol revs to 8,200 normally but many upon many of the owners bought chips that run the car up to 9000 normally aspirated. These guys also do a lot of modifications. One in general did this and runs 240 hp all engine. He has to have about 150K miles on it right now and he drags it about every weekend for the past 5 years. Engines still going strong as is all 5000 b16a's running around today at 100K miles now.

9000RPMs on an F20c is no big deal, as mentioned ... Other Honda blocks like the B16s and B18s can meet that redline if tuned properly using parts from Spoon or Mugen easily. The Spoon tuned F20c can redline close to 12,000RPMs ... I don't believe there is a problem with the engine. More of human error as mentioned above as well.
