I was killing some time the other day and went into Border's Book Store. I strolled over to the car book section and saw a book relating to past cars (maybe prototypes) created by the manufacturers. I looked up Honda and saw a picture from...I believe 1993 that looked like the S2000 (tail lights were slightly different) and it said that the car had a 5 cylinder VTEC engine. It wasn't called the S2000 but had some other 3 letter designation name. Next time I'm by the book store, I'll buy the book and get the picture and specs scanned in to show you guys. Yes I know...thread is usless without pics.

That was it. Thanks, Barry. These pictures are more detailed than what I saw. Good Job! I guess this was the S2000 "in the making."

Notice that the brake ducts are real with an air intake up front and an exit behind the front wheels.

That interior shot doesn't seem to have a stick in it. Was the SSM a paddle shift tranny?

Good question. I don't know.

Personally, I would have loved to see a 2.4l inline 5 powering it.
