Since the road resurfacing on my street started last week, the road has been turned from a paved street that was disintegrating, into a dirt road with various obstacles placed along it. I had just washed my car before the construction began and the car has been tucked safely in the garage under the car cover until the street once again becomes a paved road.
Meanwhile, my transportation has included a mountain bike and my beat up 1981 F-150 pickup truck. While driving the truck, I was reflecting on some of the advantages of driving a "beater". You don't have to concern yourself with where you park, you can slide around the corners on dirt roads without concern (as long as you don't hit anybody else), and who cares if it gets dirtier than it already is?
What I was thinking is that there could be some advantages to owning an S2000 that has been somewhat trashed, as long as the engine still works and the suspension hasn't been messed up too bad. I would love to do power slides on dirt roads without worrying about getting dirt wedged into places that I would never be able to clean again. If the body is already a bit wrinkled, you can park anywhere and not worry about door dings and such.
Maybe in a few years when the rest of you have finished abusing your cars I'll buy another one that I'm not quite so attached to and use it for "beater" duty.
I just sold my 99 328I with 18000 miles on it......I want to wait a little while before I buy my S, so Im driving a 1988 Honda CRX with 178000 miles on it......Its a beater but it has A/C and the engine is still strong. Its actually fun to drive and it will take a beating....
i still drive the he!! out of my corolla, it often see above 5k rev (7200rpm redline). the engine is still going strong. but the sychros on the transmissin is pretty much dead so i have to rev-match in almost every shift!
i don't have to wash her, don't have to worry about where to park. just put in gas, do oil change and go!
haha, yep. I once did that to a geo prizm...took it out to dirt roads, slid 180's (tried 360's, but they just wont work), then launched the automatic car off neutral on several occasions....haha.
