I would say S2000 UNLESS you can get a new M ,then I would defiantely get the M. Much more torque & HP.

I recently turned in my '99 Z3 after driving it 3 yrs. I was not impressed with the S2000 on the basis of short test drives, but after buying it and driving it home (10+ mis.) I was REALLY impressed. I've driven plenty of M Roadsters, too. Great engines, instant gratification on acceleration- handling problems- my neighbor totaled his when the car did a 180 with no warning on the freeway.
I joined my Z3 friends on a tour of the TX Hill Country this weekend w/my new S2000. Great group of drivers. But when I switched cars with a friend for 30 mis or so who had a Z3 just like the one I'd driven for three yrs, I couldn't wait to get back in mine. I felt like I was driving a small bus. The steering wheel was huge and placed high, steering was slow to respond to inputs, the handling was downright spooky after driving my S2K. Nice engine torque, but the rest was vastly inferior to the Honda. Buying the S2K was the smartest thing I've done in a long time. Pure FUUUUNNN!

i also toyed with a used m until i found a deal at msrp. i've driven friends m's extensively as being an ex factory bmw mechanic gets me alot of rides with my crowd. I'm glad i opted for the s2k its definitely got the more modern suspension / handling the m's is downright outdated. otoh the i would like some of the m's grunt but this isn't enough for me anymore.
car&driver has a great comparo with the M,the boxster, and the slk here's the link

I went on the UK board back in October and asked a similar question, the best piece of advice I got was to drive the cars you are thinking of.
The S2000 is a unique car, and to some it is too raw, too much of a compromise on the luxuries you might be used to.

Only you can decide what you want in a car, you've chosen two good cars, but until you take a proper test drive (ie. not 10 minutes in traffic, but out on the open road, through a few bends) then all you will hear are owners telling you to buy the car they did - it's natural!

BTW, I take delivery of a black/red S2000 this Saturday

I'm definitely the best person you want to ask this question because I have been comparing the M (2000 and 2001) and s2000 for almost a month after I sold my ITR and I finally picked up my blue s2000 last Friday.

I looked at a used M couple and M roadster (240 hp and 315 hp). I really liked the 315hp was just because the torque and gear ratio were amazing but handling is not that great. It is about $38000 for 2001 with about 10k Miles on it. After you drove a 315 hp and you wouldn't want to touch 240HP. Then, I went over the honda dealership and tested out the s2000. Driving a s2000 was kinda like driving my ITR and I always complained about the ITR was no sun roof and 5 speed. Now s2000 has both things and it is RWD. The price is about 6000 less and it is brand new.

I had been thinking over those 2 cars for about 3 weeks, then the residual value made my decisions. For a s2000 with 30k miles after 3 years, it has 70% of the residual value. M roadster is 62%. Now remember you are buying a used car that means you already lost a couple years and plus M roadster is getting new body style in 2004. Old body style always has a bad reselling value.

Now I have gotten a blue S2000 and I'm really happy with my decision.

Here are things you get and don't get with the s2000

you get:

HID Light
aggressive looks
Better price
New car
Rear Glass
Handling

you don't get:

Heated Seat
Powered Seat
Powered lock for your passenger side door.
Low-end Torque

Then again they both are great cars!

Actually, the passenger and drivers side locks are power on the S2000.

Well, Please tell me how. Once I sat in the car and I want to open the lock on the passenger side door, then I will have to reach over to passenger side.. Honda usually had a switch for power lock which I haven't found in the s yet. Again what do I know? I only have the car for 4 days.
