S2000 CB antenna install
I have a Cobra K-40 CB antenna that, on my last car -- a '99 Miata -- I mounted to the centre of the forward edge of the trunk lid. When I removed it two weeks ago, I was pleased to see that two years of being there -- locked in place by two set screws that drill slightly into the underside of the trunk lid and sitting, on the outer surface, on a black rubber pad -- had done no damage to the paint. I may have tightened the set screws a bit too much, however, because the pressure left a small dent in the metal.
I'd like to avoid even that small amount of damage to my on-order S2000, but, still, I would like to find a way to use the antenna, as the K-40 is clearly the best CB antenna available (asuming I ever do any more group driving, now that I'm no longer eligible to be a member of the local Miata club).
Has anyone come up with a better way to mount a decent CB antenna?
(If this topic has been dealt with in any past postings, sorry, I'm stil new to the group.)

Ohhhh...kay. I see.
This is a measure of the difference in the stage of growth of the S2K "community" and the Miata community. Believe me, inspite of the redneck image associated with CB radios, they are invaluable when you're on a long weekend tour with 30 other cars -- as I have been with Miata groups many times. Otherwise people are inevitably getting separated from the main group and it becomes a major headache.
As well (again, believe it or not), the ability to share observations about the passing scenery and points of interest, and to compare notes on how your car (or its tires or its tranny, or whatever) is performing through a particular section of squidlies can be useful and fun. It takes the camaraderie of the group into a kind of dynamic or moving conversation that is a unique experience.
But, hey. Never mind.

Just because the Miata comunity does something does not make it the right thing to do. If you have someone who gets out of range of a good hand held they don't belong driving with you in my opinion.
For me I can think of nothing more annoying than hearing 30 other people BSing over a CB while I am out for a drive. Ever hear of Cell Phones if you get lost?
BTW anyone who mounts a fixed CB in their S2000 should be sent somewhere for evaluation.

Roadsurfer, as Munch said, at the events that I have been to we have used Family Band Radio Service ( FRS ) walkie - talkie's with much success.
There are a few benefits of FRS over CB for the way we use them.
1. Digital
2. Semi-Private Channels
3. Size of the walkie-talkie
4. Decent range
Many brands make them, I beleive Motorlola was one of the first.
I would assume that many of the people at the Ashville meet will have a FRS radio.
