Is the S2000 geared too high or too low?
100% spot on. The first time I drove up a hill (6% grade) at. 55mph in 6th gear, and it pulled it no problem. I knew this engine was something special. On the primary cam alone, it is more than adequate power to drive around daily, merge into traffic and pull hills etc. It's like driving a 4 cyl accord. Then you have the second cam which is more like a 600cc super bike. It's really two engines in one.
On track with 4.57s I have yet to really get into 6th. I think just having a higher gear in the rear is more than enough to get the most of out a non-boosted s2000. That said I turn about 4900 in 6th at 80mph
I would also like a bigger spread between 5th and 6th gear. Use the bottom 5(most likely just the bottom 4) gears for the fun roads or track. And still have 6th gear to get you there and back without having to spin the engine so high just going down the road. This is from a guy(and wife) that likes to take 7000+ mile trips in the S. Best car we have ever had for this type of driving we do.

I find it to be very comfortable to drive and I very much like how 2nd and 3rd come into play on the track. It takes time to get use to 70 mph (have my fuel cut off at 8,500 rpm) in 2nf but it works nicely.
For the AP2's, I could see a 3.9 coming standard as a decent compromise between all out performance and some more comfort. With a few simple mods the F22 can have substantially better midrange which negates the need for shorter 1-4 gears compared to the AP1 imo. The other issue is that the AP1 can rev another 900rpms.. Since the car is more a weekend/fun car now the shorter gears don't really bother me, but even now I think a 3.9FD would be perfect NA. If I was boosted I'd think a 3.9 would probably be too short even.
