S2000. A good car to take to college?
Being someone who just graduated from college this past May, I would say there is no way I would want my S2K down at school. I lived in an apartment and the parking spaces were far too close together. I had a Grand Am while I was down there and I didn't even like having that down there. People just don't seem to care. I am pretty fanatic about my cars, and being so I would not want myself to have one down there, let alone someone else for whom I'm going to be buying it. If you got the bucks to spend 30k on a new car for you kid, that's awesome for him, but I wouldn't recommend an S2k, it stands out too much and could draw too much attention from jealous frat boys. I'd say something like a WRX or RSX would be a little toned down, yet still be a joy to drive. Keep the S2k at home for yourself....
Unless the college in located in the same town/city then I wouldn't even consider it -- even if that is the case I don't think it would be a good idea. He's going to need room to haul stuff too and from college. Might I suggest a Honda Civic Si or if you really want to spoil him a Acura RSX Type S. Another factor you might consider is the chance of snow or ice, because the S2000 would become totally useless (to anyone but a driver well skilled at driving a RWD car in those conditions). He might not like this reasoning now, but as he gets older he'll understand (just as I did).
I agree with the other posts.
This is NOT a car for a college student.
He/She would spend too much time worrying about the car and getting it fixed after vandalism, and not enough time studying.
Just my opinion.

For college get him what he needs, not wants. When he graduates and gets a job then he can get what he wants. The S2000 is not practical for anything except pleasurable driving (not a college priority).

Jealously is definitely a bad thing. The car could get keyed, top torn up, kicked, etc. You can just imagine.
Personally I would recommend the RSX Type-S. Great car, good performance while practical.

The S2000 would definitely NOT be a good car to take to school. Heck, its hardly a practical car. I'd think it woud be better to get him something more practical. the new RSX comes to mind; small and easy to park, yet more practical with backseats and more storage space. I think the Civic SI idea is probably a pretty good one too.
When he graduates from college, the S2000 may be abetter choice as a reward for all the hard work and such.
There will always be other kids that are jealous so that factor is a given no matter what you get him.
Personally, I loved having a used Accord hatchback back in school as I loaded all sorts of stuff and people into it and had a blast. Since it was a used car, I did worry about it quite as much.
