You may have saw my other car however.. 2008 BMW 335i parked on the top level on the side all the time.
Lucky for you, this same basic thing happened to me on my SRT-4.
Drove through a large, deep area of water that I couldn't see (it was at night and the road had improper drainage) and the engine hydrolocked in cylinder 3.
Had to get the piston rod replaced because it snapped, but after draining all of the water out, the engine was fine otherwise.
It was covered by my car insurance. Just had to pay the deductible. It was considered damage due to a natural disaster or "act of god" as they typically call it.
It took longer than it should have to get everything coordinated, but the insurance took care of it.

The standard auto insurance will not cover mechanical issues, unless they were caused by a covered loss (collision, vandalism, etc). So you're on your own for the hydrolock. The vandalism should be covered, as long as you carry Comprehensive coverage.
As for filing a claim, each insurer will have their own language around that, but most state that the claim has to be filed "within a reasonable amount of time" and leave it at that, open to interpretation. Given that you've had family issues (house fire), I'd say that you had other things on your mind and that your claim was filed within those parameters.

you see, this is the same kinda thinking i had, until i actually did the research and got to the bottom of it. I think my comprehensive coverage will take care of the issue if it was caused by an uncontrolled event involving water. It states plainly in the policy ... sudden loss due to .. fire,flood,water,earthquake..etc..

Not only do I have comprehensive coverage.. but we have been with our insurance for over 10 years paying premiums on all our vehicles .. no accidents in over 3 years.. never had a major accident.. we are at "Diamond" level and have the added perk of "Major Accident Forgiveness" .. so.. I really do feel like its going to be covered!
