Ditto the remarks above about locale affecting the decision. However, I live in a big city, and while I am careful about where I park, I don't obsess about it. That is what insurance is for- you may in fact someday have your top cut- but that is something which can be made good as new. So, unless it would have to be parked overnight in an unsafe spot frequently (ie on the street nightly, and cars in your neighborhood frequently get broken into), I'd say go for it.
You can do things to decrease risk- park under streetlights, don't leave anything in the cabin, etc.

Not to flame anyone here, but I can't for the life of me understand why someone would think that one car could POSSIBLY replace the other...! OK, you have a banshee of a sports car, convertible, badass 6 speed box, fast car...then you have a sporty, yet nothing too outrageous SEDAN, HARDTOP, AUTOMATIC!?!

WTF?!

Serisouly, it's more like a case of not having any idea what you want...!

You would be hard pressed to pick two cars that are more different...but the opposite car to the S2000 is really the 740il that my friend has, and the IS300 is no 740il!

Do you want a balls out, beautifully handling sports car? Or do you want a somewhat quick, 4 door "automatic"?

Man, I just fail to understand how someone could have confusion about these two cars...

yea this is all true, don't get me wrong both are great cars, however one is sportier and the other a little classier with some sport into it, I live in an apt complex that has a gated fence with limited access, but from reading posts it just seems like most everybody has had things stolen off their car or top slashed, or is it just the one guy? Also this is just wat i heard of mustang convert, and on top of that the s2k is rare so probably a little more theft than the ford. Still undecisive tho, I have a deposit on the car and would get it back if i back out, car comes in 4 weeks, and paying msrp. getting good deal but insurance could be a problem since I'm 23, single and live the the city of St. Louis. But I'm in a neighborhood with lots of Dr.'s tho.

Damn, I didn't think that this would stirr up people in this forum, they're both great cars and I'm leanin towards the S, but DAMN!! people in this forum are damn rude, I just wanted a simple opinion of what people thought of the two, and maybe help me with the decision.

I cannot really tell what is motivating your buying decision although from the short paragraph you wrote it would appear theft is. No one knows better than you the safety of the neighborhood in which you live and the places you would most take the car. Just because one guy clear across the country from you had his seats stolen should not make you fear the worst. It could happen to anyone anywhere. You take your chances and hopefully mitigate risks by using common sense.

If your buying decision is not based on theft, than I think you will find it quite easy to make a list of differences between the IS300 and the S2000. Write down a list of things you most want in your auto and see which one scores highest. Although I have to say if the S2000 is not the most clear obvious got to have it or I'll die choice, than you probably are looking for something else.

Good luck.

Hey, if you were referring to me as being rude, then you haven't seen me around here. The bottom line is that you need to figure out what you want first. Obviously, if you ask a bunch of S2000 owners which they would prefer, you going to hear an S2000, most likely. The fact is that these two cars are completely different. And that means that since you are considering both, you really need to figure out what YOU want. Asking us is going to give obvious answers...

They are both fine cars, a good friend of mine has an IS. It's not my style, I have no need for a 4 door. If you do, then get one. If you don't, then get an S2000. No one here can make those decisions for you...though, we are more than willing to offer our advice about the car that we all own.

Sorry if I sounded harsh or critical before. You just have to figure out what you want and go for it.

Good luck...

no offense taken guys, and thanks for the advice, I just wanted some opinions or your thoughts. just kinda undecisive. I just didn't expect the comments i got. I'm gonna test drive the lex tomorrow, but as for now the s2k remains mine. Oh how does the s2k drive in the snow and ice, this will be my daily, however, i'll probably be driving my girlfreinds 00 accord. most of the time. and also no one mentioned anything about the hardtop being available in the states.

Most of the guys on here are cool. I've put them through more pain than you going from an S4 to 330Ci to S2000 and even to a few other extremes.

But I finally decided on the S2000. It's the heart that I'm going with on this decision.

I'm 23. I have a condo with a secured garage. I have an SUV as a second car.

You broached the same question on IS300.net. They seem to be more receptive. But it's only because most of those guys are your age. Guys here are generally older, more mature, but there are younger fellas in here as well.

If this is your only car, go for the sedan. I wouldn't get the S2K if it was my only car. If I lived in a sunny area, different story.

But why the IS 300? It's riced out in stock form. Do you really want an automatic? Do you really want those rear lights that all those other rice guys are copying? Go for a BMW or something, man. Just a word of advice from a peer.
