S2000 As A Long-Distance Commuter?
As an owner of a G35 Coupe and formerly a CL-S, do not expect 27mpg. My G gets about 18mpg. That is 40% highway and 60% city. The VQ is notorious for sucking fuel.(premiuem fuel also) The CL-S was better, about 20-21 in mixed driving. It's possible I guess, but you will have to drive like grandma in the two cars I just mentioned.
Prius with a turbo!
or
helicopter and a Vespa!
I hate commuting in my S...sometimes I suck it up but for me driving > 1 hour in a suit with the top up or down gets old. I've never had better than 24 mpg average. I shift around 8 grand most of the time!

I commute 75 mile each way every day, 60 miles of this is interstate at 80mph, the last 15 is state road at 50-45. I have a mazda protege that is the daily driver, the S is only for fun. In the mazda I get 31mpg @80mph , I have take the S a few times and can barely manage 22mpg and need to run 93 octane. I love my S but no way will I beat it up with that commute and it make's me appreciate the S more on the weekend. Hey, get a Corolla or something roll up the windows put the air on and start to listen to books on CD. It's worked for me so far.
no way you can get 27mpg with " Fun driving mode"
but i find stock stereo to be good enough to satisfy me.
and usually put it on mute when im not crusing, cuz engine sound is a killer stereo that can't be compare to any other sound.
maybe S2k is missing a lot of stuff you are looking for, but it has many unique features that can't be seen in other cars.

Oh well.
Thank you all for your input...it seems obvious that, as much as I love the S2000, I'll have to let my id win over my ego. Or the other way around.
Looks like I'll switch my scan to the slightly used RSX-S, Civic Si, VW GTI, VW Beetle Turbo S side of the coin for my commuter...
And again...thank you all for your input. You are owners of a fine car, be sure....just not the one for me right now. This seems a very good community. If you see a screaming yellow GTO barreling over the 5, wave!

Well, let me add my data. I got the S2K as a pleasure car, and have an 05 Outback XT as a daily driver. My commute is 70 miles round trip, 90% highway at 65-80mph. Since getting the S2K on August 6, it has become my primary ride! I like getting 6-10mpg more than the Outback; on the first 4 tanks, the S2K has gotten 27-30mpg. Mostly relaxed driving with a couple VTEC hits now and then. And keep in mind I have been driving top down the whole time, which likely reduces mileage on the highway.
My first impression was that the S2K was going to be a rough ride on the highway. We have concrete highways that suck out here in VA. If I avoid the bumps and potholes (not hard to do after you memorize the route), the S2K is not bad at all.
The important thing to me is that the S2K is a lot of fun to drive. That alone makes it a great daily driver and is something that can't be matched in very many cars. I have had sports cars before, and the S2K is definitely in a league of its own.
Finally, how big are you? At 6-1/235lb, I probably couldn't take more than 1-2 hours in the car (my 45 minute commute is no problem). For a smaller person, I think this would not be so much of an issue.
Sounds like you may have decided to write the car off, but my impression is that the S2K is a lot better as a daily driver than I imagined. I have been loving it.
Acura RSX ot TSX would be other great options. My wife has a TSX, and it gets 32-35mpg on long trips. Very nice car despite the FWD.
