S2000...made in the USA or Japan?
Hey guys, I had a quick question that I was hoping you could help me out with. Obviously the S2000 Is a Japanese car, being a Honda and all...but my question is, are they built in America? I am assuming that they indeed are, but I wanted to double check.
The reason I need to know this is because I will be importing a S2000 from the US into Canada. Duty states that if the car is not from North America, I will need to pay 6.1% Duty on it. But if it is built in the US, there is no duty. Any help would be great, Thanks! |
look at the decal from the window
100% japan construction. 0% USA construction all parts/assembly=japan look in the papers from purchase for window decal |
Built in Japan. 1st character of VIN is "J", indicating as such. However, it's manufactured for sale as a US vehicle. Are you sure the duty isn't just for cars that come from outside the US?

Yeah,it's made in Detroit.!!!

Im pretty sure I would have to pay duty on it if it was built in Japan. Anything that is not made in the US you need to pay duty on (Im pretty sure, I need to double check)
Thanks for the info though, much appreciated. |

All s2000 are made in Japan. Around May/June 2004 they changed which factory in Japan they were made in but every s2000 is made in Japan. |

ask your canadian friends don't ask here....plenty of people have imported cars from the US to canada. Check the local canadian forums.
|
They have to be built here in the U.S. They're rebadged Fords, right? :thinker:

you guys are all wrong. They're made in the same factory as the Chevy Malibu (the MAXX of course, I'm not crazy)...
Don't tell me you can't tell the similarity? ;) |

We get more colors too.
They're far far far cheaper in the USA... $34,050USD vs $50,300CDN At an exchange rate of about 1.13cdn -> 1.00usd, it's nearly twelve grand cheaper to buy in the USA. Yes, you'll get stung with 6.1% duty, you will also have to pay PST & GST, pay a $209 RIV registration fee, $100 A/C excise tax, then get daytime-running lights installed ($100ish), get it provincially ($70) and federally inspected (included in RIV fee), and you'll be good to go. I'll be doing this myself soon, too. :) A Suzuka '02-03 please =) |

Well, the S2000 is not and cannot be made in USA. It isnt full of plastic, it handles well. The engine is efficient.....need I go on? Sounds harsh, but american cars arn't that good are they? No, S2K is pure Japanese. They really know how to make a car

It was made once where the NSX was made... once :( If this picture was taken in 1999 and that Berlina was shipped to Europe it could be my car you see there.... ;) |

Better with British Leyland's Jaguar,maybe....old chap.!!!! :D  :D |
Hey guys, thanks for all the feedback. I was hoping I could aviod the 6.1% duty, but even after that, I will be saving quite a bit instead of buying from Canada.

(Just having some fun, they're all actually made in China by the company thats going to start making the MG) |
Just pay your 6.1% and $220 RIV fee and $100 AC tax and 6% GST, and whatever your PST rate is cuz at a 88 cent dollar you'll still be thousands ahead.
EDIT: just saw your civic pics in the gallery... Please, no provincial tax in Alberta!!! You're worried about 6% duty? |
