Default S2000 Nav system

I have the facia for the JDM Nav system on order and will be taking to my dash with the coping saw presently.

In the meantime I need to decide on what to install in the proposed big hole in the dash. I could drop in the VDO Dayton 5200 which uses a reasonable nice wide screen monitor and can have other inputs.

Another option is a disassembled laptop. The beauty of this is that it can provide DVD, ODBII diags, tuning for a Motec (thinking ahead) and even e-mail (mega-nerd!). But what I really need is Sat Nav. I know there are plug in GPS modules for iPaqs and Palms with associated Nav software, but are there any hardware/software solutions for laptops that provide street level mapping and route finding.

Anyone?

If you are going to spend the money, put in either a nav system from Alpine (they have 3 different size monitors), Kenwood ( touch screen-3-d view ) or Pioneer.

I guess the use will all depend on whether you know the areas that you will be driving in well or not.

I have the JDM sat/nav and use it quite a lot. But that is because I don't know the area very well....

Can you please answer a question everyone is asking me? Is the surround symmetrical? Will it fit in a LHD vehicle?

This is not an issue for me as we are RHD, but it is for everyone in the US and most of Europe.

Looks fantastic except for two things. No maps for Aus, and billoddy annoying support people. You know the kind of people who don't want to say 'No, it doesn't do that', so they skirt around the question and you have to re-ask it three times. And then when you get the answer you get the distinct feeling they are talking license restrictions rather than technical limitations.

So has anyone here used the EarthMate GPS on a PC? Does it work with other software (the GPSy site lists it as being partially compatible)? Are the StreetAtlas files a standard format?

The long and short of it is I'll probably order one of their refurb units and StreetAtlas and Eartha (Kitt?) and just check it out.

Weird, I emailed back and forth with him last night. Apparently mine has shipped and should be here shortly. I've also enquired about other parts.

Wow, that was quick. It arrived today.

Bad news for you LHD'ers. It's definitely assymetrical. It angles out slightly to the right to meet the instrument binnacle. Won't work in a LHD .

Photos shortly.
