The button isn't "locked out," at least it wasn't on my '02 when I got curious enough to try it once. The starter does engage and make an unpleasant sound. Well, at least my curiosity was satisfied.
The starter would engage only if you also have the clutch depressed while you are curious.

I was indeed curious enough to have the clutch pedal pushed in.

Rai,

You probably don't know this. But in old LeMan's race drivers rushed to their cars then started. When doing so they found the ignition being on the left side of the wheel for easy reach.

That is why until this day Porsche Carerra has ignition key on the left of the steering wheel. Push button start is another way of making the ignition seemless and quick.
I know that. But road cars are NOT LeMans race cars.

Gosh darn it, race cars now have external starter motors, maybe Porsche should do that too

I know some things may be endearing (or whatever you want to call it).

Just a PITA when you're test driving a Porsche and you stall it and then it takes you 5 extra seconds to find the key. because 99.9% of cars have the key on the right side of the wheel.

They used to be.

something as simple as actual key fitting into your keyhole seems abit more imprtnt as we make it sound like.(without that key,,theres a wide world of able hackers/crooks that can get into the 'true keyless' new luxury rides.you feel me?.Something about the startup of a ignition being solely functional thru signals/waveSignals doesnt make me feel too assured if own that kind of ride, call me nutso. For every company that comes out with a new creation/technology ,theres already 100 diff. ways to break through that technology, and in this example it seems very 'crackable'..yup
Hackers/crooks? You've got to be kidding me. Keyless entry codes are a lot harder to "crack" than you think it is. It's not like it's a single code, it's a varying combination that changes everytime you get out and in your car. Let's say a thief broke through the window, how is he going to start the car? I'm pretty sure automobile engineers have thought this out more than any of us have.

???... It's never been the first.

A bunch of the mid-90s diesel trucks at work have pushbutton start.

It's jsut a nifty novelty..

I guess it's also a PITA when you are test driving said Porsche and lift-off mid turn, only to find yourself quickly facing the direction you just came from (because 99% of the cars on the road have a front engine). Gotta love a 35/65 F/R weight distribution.

People who drive Porsches know what they are getting into, they also respect that Porsche has the greatest (and most successful) racing heritage of any carmaker EVER. Like I said in a previous post, the ignition will always be on the left. If the ignition was on the right, if the car was easy to drive, if it didnt have that classic flat-6 growl ... it wouldn't be a Porsche.
You sure about that, Jimbo? Ya ever heard of those eye-talians, drive them Fezzas? 'Parently they pretty good in that Formula One thing....And they still race! Unlike Porsche, which took a few years off to [ahem] make an SUV....

Signed, a bitter Porsche fan.....I agree with everything else you wrote though...
