S2000....Quiet as a mouse? (long!)
Yellow S2000 and I had the opportunity to attend the Nevada Silverstate Challenge this weekend. This is a race where they close off 90 miles of public highway for people like us. It was, in a word, awesome. While I had hoped to drive this year I gave my slot to a Pantera owner. I had fluid drained from the knee a week earlier and reconsidered driving(also had fear for my baby; "Electra"). I should note it wasn't a "chicken out" as I piloted a Pantera in the 150MPH class two years prior. At the park in Ely, pre-race, we found a Yellow S2K (same as Mark's) parked with the Pantera team (ironic?) Turns out the owner has a Pantera (like me) and decided to take out his S2K. He entered in the 105 MPH class with a technical speed of 124 MPH. There is a target speed, which is what you try to average over the 90 mile course, as well as a tech speed which you may not exceed. Tech speed is based on safety equipment. Well Mark and I camped out 15.5 miles into the course at an abondoned farm. Middle of nowhere BF Eygpt! Next morning 250 cars hit the course.....cars all day long at 30-60-120 second intervals depending on class. Every make and model under the sun. From MY2000 Lincoln town cars in the touring class, to 1937 F1 truck (cool truck) in the 160 MPH class (180 Tech speed!), to unlimiteds........record for unlimiteds is 207 MPH average over 90 miles. One disappointing thing we noticed we noticed was the utter lack of sound from the S2000 piloted by Russ Jacobson and his son Kevin (based in Salt Lake City). I mean no sound!!! What a bummer. Mark and I agreed it was probably louder then hell in the car but from the side of the road....whoosh....HKS here we come!!!!!!
Best sounding cars?
1) 1992 Ferrari 348
2) 1999 Roush prepared SVT Mustang
3) 1998 Saleen Mustang
And of couse anything running 180 MPH to unlimited
.

I e-mailed Russ after the event & this is what he had to say...
Marc,
Thanks for the message. It was a blast. We enjoyed it very much.
You'll have to try it in the fall. The car was very stable. We
launched a little slow and then ran it up to 124 for a couple of miles.
Then backed off to about 105. That's about what it should of been when
we passed you. We went back up to 124 for the speed trap and back down
to about 95 for a ways. We were slow comming out of the narrows and
missed the last checkpoint (8). Found out we were slow when we started
compairing time at mile marker 11, about 7 miles out. Went back up to
124 to the finish. We think we crossed the finish in the second that we
were supposed to, but we'll have to wait for the final results to know
exactly.
A couple of things on the S2000. There is a smell I can't identify when
over about 115 mph. Something gets hot. Second, the speedometer is
about 5 mph fast over 100. Most likely some error below that but I
haven't checked it. That was against my GPS which I believe to be
fairly accurate. Hope to see you on the 10th. I'll try to make it.
