Default S2000 Reliability

Anyone who reads the comsumer polls from places like J D Power knows that the Honda S2000 is a remarkably reliable car, but the S2kI membership is a subset of all S2000 owners, and I'd like to get a snapshot of our member's experiences. Here's what I'm looking for:

I want to get an idea of how many cars have had failures of any kind that were not caused by something that happened to the car after it left the factory. For example, if you over reved your motor and dropped a valve, that doesn't count, because this is my poll and I get to make the rules. The kind of failure that does count would be a timing chain tensioner failure, abnormal top wear, stock motor failure, or wheel bearing failure. However, on cars that are tracked, if the tracking might have contributed to the failure, than don't count it. IOW, before counting a failure in your total, consider whether or not it was due to something that was going to fail independent of the way the car has been used and or abused. Be honest please, and be conservative. If you're not sure about a failure just don't count it, unless you feel it is a cronic weakness in the cars design.

Since I'd consider more than four failures with one car to be excessive I just put everyone with more than four failures in the same group, because they have had what I would consider to be very un-Honda-like reliability.

Thanks guys and gals.

I hesitate to count my 2 failures as such, but they fit your rules. Both were fixed under warrantee just as it was about to expire: seat bolster crushed on driver's left leg, and top wear.

I have had absolutely zero mechanical issues with this car, although I had the clicking rear hubs which were recently fixed by some tightening.

As most of you know, my car has been so reliable that it's almost embarassing, considering the way I drive the poor thing sometimes. I do have a reinforced differential and a different LSD and gears now, but none of that was related in any way to anything failing. I actually ran my stock diff for a while after installing the SC/AC, because I wanted to prove to myself that it could take the kind of launches I like to do. I'm still running the stock clutch for the same reason. Somewhere around 53,000 miles now, and almost seven years old, but so far the little Honda is proving to be every bit as reliable as the MY90 red MX5 it shares a garage with.

Those of you who never post because you never have any problems need to vote in this poll, even if you don't want to post any comments.

Hmm... Well these non-mechanical issues do speak to overall satisfaction with the product, red. That said, if you're interested in mechanical failures you could start over...

I too think the seats hold up well; it's the foam that holds up the cushion / bolster that disintegrated in mine.

^energy, was that the result of bad service, or did it just go bad on you?

Probably came from the factory loose as far as the Honda tech could tell.

spun a bearing/bent a rod/diff bearing/cat cut the 02 sensor off/tail light wiring shorted/HID ballast burned out/synchros/U joint/top's plastic window shattered/etc etc etc

Honda isn't nice to me either, I paid for most of that and I still have warranty on the engine/drivetrain.

Well, agreed. Definitely call that a failure (though that's the first time I've ever heard of that one).
