I drove my S2000 about 5 miles last night in the snow. There was about 1-2 inches on the road. Really slushy crap all over the place. I started in second and was real careful about taking corners and stopping. My impressions the car does fine in the snow. It acts like any other real wheel drive car I have had. The width of tiny tread is what makes it hard to drive. When we were going straight I was keeping up with the flow of traffic and braking was at least as good as anyone else. We all have 4 wheel braking systems after all!! The back likes to come around in corners, but that is too be expected in a RWD car. I had an 85 volvo before and it was no better in the snow. The only advatage it had were skinnier tires. It was RWD also. Volvo didn't have AWD cars at that time.

Overall, I have had no problems with rain this year either. I live in Portland Oregon. If anyone is from this area you must know that we have had a monsoon season pretty much!! It rained for 34 days in a row at one point. We have had about 3 sunny days since Novemeber...i'm not exagerating. I took the 26-217 on ramp at 70+ in the rain a few days ago (anyone who lives near beaverton or portland knows this off ramp well!) the s2000 handled it like a champ. Can't say the same for the SUV in the inside lane who thought he was driving a sports car. After crossing into the other lane and almost hitting the concrete barrier....he slowed down!! I have OEM S02's with 13k on them.

I had the oppurtinity to speak with a honda body shop. My g/f and I were in an accident in her CRV on tuesday the 22nd. WE got rear-ended by and explorer...totaled the explorer...did no visible damage to the CRV except tore the vinly cover on the Spare...it was amazing!! WE are a little sore...no real damage. Back to the subject:
The auto body guy told me he has seen at least 7 S2000's in this year for the same exact thing. People going into a corner and getting on the throttle hard (i guess expecting it to understeer) or, going in too hot and lifting the throttle have wrapped the back of their S2000's around trees. It is almost always the back 1/4 of the car. People would complain to him about the car just going "crazy" and he would try not to laugh because as they would explain it, it was obvisouly just snap oversteer or power oversteer. Most people were just dumbfounded when he explained that is how RWD car behave. It is too bad that almost every car sold in FWD now....people need to learn how to drive a RWD car before they get in something like the S2000. I am glad I had my volvo. While, not powerful, it oversteered like a bitch!! You guys think the S2000 is bad..hehehe

Anyway, just some interesting observations.

I would still be extremely wary and cautious. Temperature has a great deal to do with the characteristic of the snow. If it was slush and your tires were able to "squish" the snow out from under it, then you'd be OK with the OEM tires. Below a certain temp, the snow no longer does this and the car will be useless. If the temp continues to drop you will reach another point where driving will be "manageable". This temp range is kinda mysterious and also depends on the humidity of the area where you live. Humidity changes the characteristic of the snow and how your car reacts to it. I'm glad you got home OK.
