S2000 vs Corvette Insurance and Mileage
I was reading in some other forums yesterday and was surprised that the general consensus was that Corvettes were in general cheaper to insure and got better gas mileage than the S2000. Can anyone who has owned both confirm or deny this? (I had thought that this was one of the selling points of the S2K...kind of surprising)
Ok,I'll take a stab at this one.
I own a 02 Corvette Z06 and 03 S2000.Both have the same ins limits and the same 2 drivers...both over 40.The Vette ins for 6 mos is $43 higher than the S...mainly because it is a more expensive car and it's body is composite( not fiberglass).Replacement parts are much more expensive.
On the Vette,my last tank avg =25.4 On the S the last tank avg was 29.1 Most of my driving is 90% interstate and 10% other. At 80 in 6th gear, the Z is loafing at 1,900 rpm.The S however,is turning about 3,800 rpm.
Bigger motor loafing VS smaller motor working harder.

My '02 spins around 4000rpm @ 75mph.

I've owned a 02 Z06, a stock 04 S2000 and now a SC 05 S2000.
The insurance was a wash for me @ 23 with Progressive.
Gas mileage varied. (Stock S2000 vs Z06)
My worst tank in the S2000 was 23mpg. My best was 30mpg. My average was 25mpg.
My worst in the Z06 was 21mpg, my best was 27mpg. My average was 23mpg.
The S2000 didn't care if it was being beaten to hell, it would average around 25mpg. The Z06 was much more affected by abundant use of the throttle
Long story short, the Z06 cost more to maintain due to the cost of tires. A decent set for the S2000 is $500-700, while it's $900-1200 for the Z06.
Around town the Z06 was more fun due to the immense torque, but the speed limit was quickly broken. I enjoyed ripping off shifts in the S2000 while not going past 85mph.
I missed the S2000 when I had the Z06. Now I miss the Z06 when I have the S2000.

That's why I said "about" 3800.Sitting at the PC,I don't know exactly the rpm at 80.
Both cars are very diff beasts. The S is more tossable but the lack of low end tq is no fun..however the Z has great low end tq.The Honda quality is better and the S is less expensive to maintain.
I wouldn't be happy owning just one,that's why I have both.2 diff worlds>

The thing with small inline 4 motors is they can get really great fuel economy if driven easy or average mpg if driven hard. It's not so much rpms that determine fuel economy...it's throttle position. I've logged over 34mpg in the S2000 on the highway at 75 mph.
