Is The S2000 Worth Purchasing?
Background Info
I currently own a 1999 Honda Prelude with 60,000 miles on it. I bought the car new in 00 and its in excellent condition. I drive the car as my DD.
I live in Huntington Beach, CA and live 2 miles from work, 2 miles from the gym, and across the street from the grocery store. I have an enclosed parking spot connected to my apt. so lots of sunny days and no long commutes. Garage kept car.
I can probably get $13,000 for my prelude which is in excellent condition and sell the modifications off the car and net $15,500 total. I would be looking for a low milage s2000 for around $18,000 to $20,000 dollars.
I modified my prelude with full suspenison. Tein SS, sway bars, wheels/tires, strut bars, tie bars. etc and love going on canyon roads. I have practiced a lot with heel-toe downshifting, the basics of braking, lines, etc for driving. I am ready for the step up to a RWD car...and also have the money.
Question?
How well does a modified s2000 handle compared to a modified Honda Prelude?
What are some common problems S2000 owners run into with these cars?
How does an s2000 fair being a daily driver?
Are s2000's relatively expensive to insure? (I can call my agent)
Would buying a low milage s2000 be reliable?
(I ask this cause I know exactly what has happened with my prelude from Day 1...couldn't say that about a used car.)
Is the car a lot more fun to drive than a prelude? (s2000/X prelude owners?)
#1 i had a prelude loved it . to compare the 2 it's night and day
#2.common problems honda service is not that good up here we have
billman to service our rides in the metro area and he is not leaving
#3.real good daily driver until it snows in ca not a problem
#4.insurance depends on your age ,record ,area and income
#5 the s is alot more fun to drive than my prelude was it's made to be
pushed.
hope that was some help .

1. i dont own a prelude so i do not know how well they perform with mods but i seen many preludes doing poorly against same amount of mods on RSXs but sametime S2000 is not really good car to gain lot of power off the bolt ons either.... but as it already is, it performs good enough for u to feel exciment
2.S2000 has some problems with their clutch buzzing plastic window(00-01) and some of the minor problems but nothing big
3 depends if u r tall and barely fits into the S then it wont be a good daily driving car and the suspension is perdy stiff and also high reving so dont expect quiet and comfy ride
4. depends on ur driving records and age, it is fastest to call the agent and find out
5. depends every single S2000 cant be in same kinda condition from the first day of the production on factory
that is what u have to find out some of the previous owners dont care about the car and some of them do so how can u expect us to tell if it is gonna be reliable when we dont even know the specific car u r talking about
6. im really being honest with this question i have driven my friend's Sh several times....... S2000 is way funner to be in ....

I don't drag race at all....I only use my car for DD and for weekend canyon roads.
If you were to buy an s2000.....what yr is the best yr to buy? what yr seems to have the least amount of glitches???
For the prelude....I would probably say a base model prelude thats 99+

If having a glass rear window (as opposed to the larger plastic one) is important then you have to look at an 02+ model.
Generally most changes have been minor cosmentic ones up until the 04+ where changes to the engine and drivetrain were made. Search the forums for more info on differences between model years.
Apart from that, buy the best condition, best serviced car you can get for your money (and don't buy any fro ebay)
