Default S2k holds its own...

I grabbed this from another forum. Thought it interesting. Note that the NSX appears to be marketed as a Honda in Europe:

Came across this today and found it a little interesting. These are lap times completed on the Northern Loop of N

Some things I didn't expect:

1. M coupe is FAST!!! (I know it is, but didn't think it was THAT fast)

2. How can the auto-trans C32 AMG be faster than a Honda NSX???

3. The corvette should be higher up the list.. but we don't know what version they're testing.

4. I would think that the 321 hp M3 coupe be faster than the Boxster. The boxster is a conv. and M3 is one of the best handling car with a lot more horsepower.

What I want to see is times for:
1. Any of the caterham 7 beasts.
2. TVR Tuscan, Tamora.
3. Z06 405 hp !!!
4. Japanese supercars: Skyline, Supra, RX7.
5. It'll be interesting to see what kind of times the Ferrari F2001 gets.

frayed, only the USA and Canada have Honda's badged as Acura's.

lupin, the C32 AMG is a 349bhp car! That stomps the power of the NSX, even the much revered and very rare Japanese NSX type R's (total production of 100 vehicles) can't compete on power. Sure the handling balance of the NSX is superior, but it is conceivable the Merc could lap in that time.

The Boxster S does have a significant weight advantage over the M3.

The Caterham R500 is a sub 8 minute car. It set a new lap record in 1999 at 7min 55.21secs.

The list above seems to suggest that, this has been surpassed. I'm not arguing for the accuracy of the data just the feasibility.

Look at the power that this thing has ... this is what the M3, M Coupe and M Roardster have had for years everywhere but in the States.

-----------------------
2. How can the auto-trans C32 AMG be faster than a Honda NSX???
-----------------------
It's got a pretty big power advantage and despite if being a Merc, it's very well set up by AMG. Also, the 'auto' does not handicape it too much ... it's got gobles of torque.

-----------------------
3. The corvette should be higher up the list.. but we don't know what version they're testing.
-----------------------
It was whatever 'Vette was the 'king' about 2 years ago. I'm no Vette expert but I think it was C5 (or C6).

-----------------------
4. I would think that the 321 hp M3 coupe be faster than the Boxster. The boxster is a conv. and M3 is one of the best handling car with a lot more horsepower.
-----------------------
No. The BoxtserS is a faster car than even the 321hp M3. In particular on the track ... in the straighline there's very little betwen them but the BoxsterS is in a different 'handling 'league' to the M3. It's got more grip, stops quicker, changes direction quicker and is more adjustable. M3 is awesome .... but it's more 'sedan' oriented and not as 'perfromance' orienced as the M Coupe or BoxtserS.

-----------------------
1. Any of the caterham 7 beasts.
-----------------------
7:56 - Caterham R500 (230hp @8,600rpm from a 1.8L engine, weight = 460kg, set by Robert Nearn in 2000).
8:06.02 - Caterham Superlight (140 hp 470 kg, Robert Nearn 1998/1998)

-----------------------
2. TVR Tuscan, Tamora.
-----------------------
I don't know that one ... actually I have not seen times for any of the TVRs.

-----------------------
3. Z06 405 hp !!!
-----------------------
Likewise. I'd like to see what it can do there as well. Hasn't happened yet to my knowledge. Though take this for a comparission value:
9:25 - Callaway C12 -99 (400 hp, Sport Auto 1999)

-----------------------
4. Japanese supercars: Skyline, Supra, RX7.
-----------------------
8:28.1 - Nissan Skyline GTR (standard 276 hp, Stephen Sutcliffe, AutoCar 1998/1999)

This is the fastest 'stock' GTR time, though there has been a boosed, race-suspension and race-tyred GTR clocked at 7:59

RX7 would be quick but I have not seen a time for it .... just a guess would be 8:20 - 8:30 kind of time.

Supra is pretty slow here. Supra has a lot of power, though not that much in this company when un-modded. Also, the Supra is not renowned for it's handling or braking. I'd be surprised to see one do better than 8:45. Though, I've read about a heavily modded Supra getting close to the flat 8 mark.

-----------------------
5. It'll be interesting to see what kind of times the Ferrari F2001 gets.
-----------------------
Yeah sure will. Time to beat is :
7:44.06 - Gemballa GTR Biturbo 600HP (Horst von Saurma, Sport Auto 2000) ... that's a modded 911 Turbo :-)

ps. As far as 'feasability', the 911 GT2 was set by Horst von Saurma from "Sport Auto" in 2001. And most of the other cars in the sub-8 category have the times dated either 2000 or 2001.

Where do you get that conclusion? The Supra was recognized as an all-around badass supercar in the mags I read, & IMO was very close to the S2000 handling-wise other than the heavier feel.

I, too, would like to see what the Z06 could do at the Green Monster. There was one at Road America this year setting all kinds of track records...that is one formidable car.

Very interesting list. Glad they used just one driver...but man, what a job he has! Nice!

I didn't know the Boxster S was so much faster than the S2K around a track - I thought the two cars were VERY equal performance wise.

Can someone explain the disparity or have I just been fooling myself??

Thanks for posting the list frayed.

Moneeb - I am also surprised by the large difference since the Boxster S and the S2000 are very close to each other in many other track comparisons. Let's be realistic though. The Porsche has the edge on torque, and from what I've read, it is easier to drive at the limit than the Honda. These results mean that the Boxster S is faster on this track with this driver. Some drivers are more comfortable with certain cars compared to others, so while useful, this comparison is not completely objective (if there even is such a thing).

Also, don't fret too much, results like these don't translate well to the real world where driver ability is the largest variable.

Just to make things more confusing here's another dataset. Note different drivers. Man, R compound tires on the Audi turned it into a supercar beast:

(courtesy of born-free.net)

7,46 = 160 km/h 2001 Porsche 996 GT2, Horst von Saurma, Sport Auto 2001.
7,47 = 160 km/h 2001 Porsche 996 GT2, Walther R
