Insured in 55427, live in 55803. It can't be too bad since my agent told me to do it this way in order to save a few bucks a month.
Your agent needs to have their license revoked.

Thanks all for your opinions. Seems like a wide variety of responses- like I said, I already spoke with an insurance agent off the record who said their company (don't ask) wouldn't really care to investigate. So I was wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I'm not out to take advantage of everyone else by raising everyone's insurance, and I'm not out to screw the insurance company. I was just curious about acceptable behavior on these things.

You know how only a sucker pays retail for a nice watch? And how only a sucker doesn't take advantage of tax writeoffs? And how only a sucker believes the speed limit is 'actually' 65mph? I don't want to be 'that guy.'

Thanks again.

its a "everyone does it / don't ask don't tell" thing. It goes along the same principle as ' how many mile will u put on it in a year?'

i wouldn't even worry about it.

The cars are registered to 94547, where we live. The cars are insured in 94572, at my parents house. Less than .6 miles away. If we insured the cars where we live, the premium goes up $500. Go figure. When I talked to my agent about it, she saw that as weird - so - she said that we'll pretend that we didn't have that conversation. Cool agent

First off you can't blame a guy for trying to save a few bucks. And in my opinion (which doesn't count for much) it's none of anyones business if you can or can't afford it, thats not the question at hand.

Im no expert, and maybe you are already doing this, but I would register it in the parents state, with my name on the title and theirs second, keep the NC plates and drive in CA with NC plates.

God forbid anything to happen, but you could say you moved their temporarily for business.

VERY interesting post. I was actually wondering the exact same thing the other day. While I was in college, I was using my parents car (they're from San Diego and I went to school in LA), but the car was still insured as if it were still in SD. I can't blame him for wondering this as insurance rates in LA can be astronomical relative to other areas. Despite this, I would avoid any future headaches and just get insurance the legal way.

Yeah, I am not the primary driver of my car. My dad is, and I drive his Denali. As long as the car's insured and you have a semi-clean record you should be okay.

If you lie about where you live to an insurance company to save $900 a year you are out to screw the insurance company.
