S2K Quality Note
"I walked out with my near fully loaded SAV for $1.5K less than sticker and free floor mats (a big deal for BMW's), window tinting and surface protection package. So I saved ~$2.5K bringing my total on two vehicles alone to $6.5K. If I take that same process back to every vehicle I've ever purchased, I figure out of the 9 cars I've bought in my lifetime, that one of them was free. Think about it."
WOW! If you think floor mats, window tinting and "surface protection package" are worth $1000 total then you really are gullible.

From GregStevens:
Steve, you and I have a long and sordid past that precedes even this site. However, you are wrong on this point and let me tell you why. As S2K Dude alluded, a number of us went to Japan last year to for almost a week to do a number of car-related things. The morning of the first full day there, we arrived at the Takanezawa factory for a specially arranged tour of the plant where they make the S2000, the NSX and the Insight. During our tour, they were doing a run of S2000 for the European market and we got the whole tour of the ground floor of the facility.

I agree with Greg's interpretation, hand built vs. hand assembled -- but then the major distinction here is the fact that there is no assembly line, rather independent jigs on which the cars move.
Most cars are hand assembled as they roll down an assembly line -- ever wonder why so many people work at the car plants? So in essence there is virtually no difference in the amount of

Mechanization means fewer mistakes.
Hand-built is not nececarily a good thing.
Yeah it's great to say, my car was hand built, but people are affected by fatigue and feelings. Some are just morons
"Made in America", when it comes to cars, I don't like made in America.

Less than sticker = $1,500.00
Window Tinting = $300.00
Floor Mats = $300.00
SPP = $600.00
So, I mis-added...its $2.7K!
The following description might help to clarify things some:
Honda says the Takanezawa is their flagship factory. It was originally created exclusively to build the NSX. The S2000 now shares an assembly line with the aluminum-bodied NSX and Insight. It is best described as a small-number mass-production custom factory where high-tech production technology and old-time craftsmanship come together. For example, the impressive front end of the S2000 is made with a 1,500-ton press machine to draw, bend, trim, and trim again, in an exact, precise method. In order to produce the strengthened chassis for the S2000, Honda developed a variety of new welders including custom hand-held welders for the X-frame based body. A track goes along the ceiling that can move plus raise and lower the bodies as they go through the factory. With the exception of some welding and painting robots, the S2000 is almost 100% hand-built (assembly and installation). Aside from such unique features, uncompromising quality control and precise production are the pride of the factory.

I purchased my S2000 in Oct. 99 and paid sticker. There was no BS from the salesman and the car has been virtually defect free save the seat belt and spark plug recall. I also believe that developing a relationshiop with the dealership has had it's rewards. I now have the abraided top problem and my dealership agrees that it is a Honda problem My sales manager, service manager and the lead tech is meeting with the Honda Rep after the holidays to fight for the new top that I kick in $300. for. I think the relationship I have with them has helped a lot, not to mention that I dont go in there acting like a jerk anytime there is a problem. A little courtesy and professionalism goes a long way.
