I have a colleague at work who regularly chats with me regarding the Stook. He currently drives an E-series Mercedes but is keen to pick up a sports car. What's holding him back is that his wife only drives autos and cannot cope with a clutch.

He claims that his local Honda dealer sales rep has told him that a sequential manual shift option (a' la MR2) is on the cards and due for release early in 2001.

Frankly, I am not at all convinced there is any truth in this and I think its a case of the sales rep telling you anything if he thinks he's got a potential sale. However, given the trend with other sports vehicles it ain't as stupid as it sounds.

Has anybody else heard of this and what are your thoughts on the pros/cons of such a shifter?

If something like that is going to happen, we'd have learned about it on this board long before any dealer. As my dealer told me, "We're the last ones to know about what's really going to happen to these cars."

Spoon has one. Go to http://www.spoonsports.co.jp/j/twinmodeclutch.html and use altavista for translation.

a highlight from the translation (grin):

"For example, the one which is not accustomed to manual operation sharing, liking you to ride when and, because creep occurs, while and the like being delayed it becomes very easy."

uhh, yeah, ok.

either way, i hope not. the s2k is a true roadster, it should stay a manual. i already have a sport shift, and i can tell you its day and night. better than an automatic, but no way can it ever replace the manual in feel and control.

When I first saw the S2000 in a dealership the dealer said "I see you're interested in the Honda S2000". I replied, "Yes, what would you like to know?". He said "Whether or not you've got a lazy $75K?". I liked this guy immediately.

Seriously, dealers don't know jack about the S. They have no need to as they are already sold before they hit the floor, whilst Civic's have to be sold against a myriad of competitors based on Kw, storage, cup holders etc.

There are already S's with automatic transmissions, tame rear ends and roofs. They're called Integra's. The Twin Mode clutch is just a button operated clutch so still scary to the manually impaired, and if it's like other Spoon parts you could probably get a nice Boxster w/Tiptronic for the cost an S and it.

At the time I bought my S my girlfriend really wanted to drive it but couldn't drive a manual. I thought that was a major selling point

As far as the sequential MR2 is concerned, it is already offered in Europe.

Which basically means that for manual box challenged drivers the car is easy to drive, even in slow traffic when the car gently moves forward... C'mon guys, what's up with you? Can't you read a little japanese?

I actually find this one more amusing:

"of 198 and 000 Yen entire country you receive". I did not know that Japan was for sale! And cheap at that, less that $2000USD.

Now, seriously, I'm not sure if this is a mod for serious driving, but I do not side with the opinion that sequential gear boxes are for the weak of heart.

You will be seeing more and more sports cars coming with sequential boxes. Quicker that a human and perfect match revving on downshifts all of time. Could you ask for more?

No one saw the Type V coming until Honda did an official press release. I would assume the same to be true for any future upgrades.
