Default S2k Speedometer error?

Someone told me the other day the S has an inherent speedometer error, even w/ stock wheels and tires. He didn't say by how great the error is. Anyone here know anything about this?

Thanks,
Warren

I thought all cars have a small inherent (and negligible under 99.9999% of circumstances) error in the speedometer. Sounds like BS to me... I wouldn't worry about it.

I've mentioned this before, but in MOTOR's Performance Car of The Year test back in 03', they radar-tested the S2000 to a top speed of 246km/h (154mph). And reported that the speedo was 'bang-on' accurate, reading that precise number.

Of course there are many variables involved inc. tyre condition, pressure etc etc...but I thought that was pretty cool.

Maybe the speedometer is right on at 154 MPH (haven't been there in my S), but my speedometer reads about 1.5 MPH above what my GPS indicates at 75 MPH (on spedometer). I presume that the odometer has the same bias. BTW, the GPS is valid to a fraction of an MPH.

At 70 my 2005 (2500 miles stock tires)reads about 1mph high according to my GPS. The actual speed could be 69.5 to 70.5 and the speedo would show 70. The GPS also jumps around a little so the 1 mph is an eyeball guess. It's close enough for my purposes.

Mine reads 1.5-2.0% above actual (both Speed x time x distance and GPS) with stock tires at 32PSI cold with 4K miles on them

Yes, there's speedometer error even with the stock rims and tires. I measured 4 mph difference at 100 mph (that's 4% error). Every instance I've heard about, mine included, have had the actual speed over ground be slower than that indicated by the display.

Different tire sizes, pressures and even wear can exacerbate the problem; that's not even getting into user caused variations such as larger or smaller tires, gears, etc.

The problems are correctable by using electronic devices to "recalibrate" the speedo signal before it gets to the display (yes this affects the odometer too).

Wow, someone should get a class-action going on against the automobile manufacturers. With a 3% error on the speedo (above actual MPH), that means my 36,000 mile warranty is actually ending earlier at 34,920 miles.
