S2K vs. Modded Miata
2.5 years on a MY2007 stock except I just upgraded wheels/tires. Came from 2000 Miata, I/H/E and other mods.
In a straight line: at WOT, no contest (your supercharger means YMMV), at partial throttle just driving around, the Miata is much closer.
Handling: S2000 has tremendous grip but nowhere near as nimble, you'll feel every one of those FIVE HUNDRED EXTRA POUNDS. The Honda is deliberate, not frisky.
Driving comfort/conventience: the S2000 is going to feel like a Cadillac, in a good way.
Remember, you can modify an S2000 too.

My last Miata was a 1990 1.6 modded to the hilt;
- Greddy turbo @ 15psi
- FM link standalone ECU, WB02 sensor + 550cc/min injectors
- 2.5" turbo back exhaust
- Tein coilovers
- Uprated brakes & Mintex M1144 pads
- CF hardtop (soft top removed)
- 15" 9lb RS Watanabe magnesium wheels with Toyo R888 tyres
- Hardog rollbar
- Elise S2 seats
- Koyo Rad + vented bonnet
The 5 was very fast, but my S with the mods in my sig is as fast and is a lot easier to manage. The only issue I had with a stock S was the gearing - it was too long compared to my 5. The 4.77 gears sorted that problem out and some. Get a front lower brace and an alignment and the handling is similar.
Save up and do the swap, you wont look back.

I would be inclined to get the S. The S is what I had hoped the Miata would become over the years.
Very similar cars but the S has a 'race inspired' motor and I use that word infrequently. It's certainly the most high strung motor I've ever driven.
If you can bump your $10K to 12-14K you can get an under 40K AP1 or a 40-60K AP2 both in good shape.

First drive the AP1.
If you like then you will know your answer on if you should buy.
Then go find one you like.
I got one in December for $11,500 and it had 57K miles which I do not consider high mileage.
I was going to sell the Greddy exhaust, mint OEM cover, aftermarket SSR GT1 wheels and rays lugs and the Cusco strut tower bar and lower tie bar and puddymod mount w/ engine damper and the K&N FIPK intake that came with the car so I could gather another $1500 or so in savings which would effectively drop the price of the car to $10,000 . . but I liked the extras so much I just kept them.
That said the car was / is in fabulous condition inside and out.
My point is when you drive it, you will like it.
After you like it you will want one.
When you go look for one, yes it is possible to find one for $10K and it does not have to have high miles on it.
It might take a while and it might take patience as well as being on the lookout so you can jump on the good deal before anyone else when it pops up but if you are ready, you will get it.
I looked at a lot of cars, AP2's and AP1's and drove a lot. I thot I wanted and had to have an AP2 2006 or newer with less than 20K miles on it. Prices were in the 20K's . . . . I found one I liked and was going to buy it but then the AP1 popped up. I shot out there the same day he posted it. I bought it on the spot after a short inspection, carfax research, and test drive and serial number match up check. The car was right and so was the price. . .so much for the AP2 for $20K !
I love the car !
Good luck and let us know when you get ur s2k !

Test drive and budget, this will tell you if you want a S2K. Also, doing anything to our car that actually adds performance and not just rice, is seriously expensive.
I did test drive one almost a year ago, and found it very impressive, but it was a short test drive. I know if I owned one I'd like it, because I like high performance cars and everyone who owns an S2K seems to like it. The only thing I thought I might not like was the seat, but seats are easy to replace, if I find it necessary.
Hey Greasyman, good to see you here, I've seen you over at m.net!
If you track a lot, the S2K would be an awesome choice. Putting around town though, I think I'd appreciate the extra low end torque that the MP62 or even an M45 gives you.
Stock S2k below 6k rpm feels like a stock Miata. Pretty anemic.
