it's fine.. but it's not worth it.... it's there for a reason... to conseal the air that comes into the box from the front and is directed to your filter...

so does that mean that there is a chance I can up something... and is there any difference in the sound when it is removed? I wanted to ask before I attempted said removal

yes the sound is louder. No it won't damage. It will however cost you 2rwhp. If you still want the air box then do a custom spoon race car style air box modifications coupled with an air duct or hose getting in cold air form the outside. I posted alot of directions on this awhile ago and other have as well. Doesn't take that long and couple with a K&N and its all good.
