Default Saw an MY2003 Si at dealership

Making an appointment at the dealership for the TSB clutch change and window regulator motor, i saw the new 2003 civic si. Nice but shifter looks awkward. It was already sold too.

I got a chance to drive the new SI. There are definite pros and cons on this car.

Pros:
  • Shifter is way cool and comfortable in that location.
  • Interior layout and styling get an A+
  • Shifter is butter smooth
  • Makes good use of the 160 HP
  • Seats are awesome for a Civic. Second only to the "S"
  • Hatchbacks are very functional, lots of cargo capacity
  • Rear seat room is above average for a car this size.
  • Good acceleration and braking (anti-lock is now standard)

Cons:
  • No Type-R... yet.
  • No 6 speed tranny
  • Wheels and tires a little small
  • Redline too low @6200 RPM
  • Hood is about 2 feet long, the smallest engine compartment I've seen in a Civic
  • No VTEC rush, just the same smooth power to redline
  • Styling is a bit on the homely side
  • Rear quarter glass does not open like on previous years
  • The previous SI had a bit more performance (but no anti-lock brakes)
  • A bit pricey at $19k and the dealer market adjustment of $1000 may be unnecessary

All in all it's a good car. The latest in what Honda has to offer in a sub-compact.
