Is this a scam?
I was looking through autotrader and did a search for across the US, under $9000 and this is what I get: http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=p...000&cardist=828
and http://www.autotrader.com/fyc/vdp.jsp?ct=p...50&rdpage=thumb
also I get a BUNCH of others that are complete scams, but my question is if the above ones are scams or not... and why do people do this?

Mainly because they can't be held to that price and will claim its a typo. They are probably just trying to get the cars noticed or didn't realize the price the put in... People are dumb sometimes.
Agree with the above post. Looks like its just a way to market their cars to get attention and when you call they will say "oops I forgot a digit". So no scam there just a crappy way to market their cars.
When I was looking for my S, I found many ads with asking prices ranging from $5K to $12K that are scams. "Owner" claims to be "firm" with the low price and is selling urgently because of a bitter divorce, etc.. This person will then tell you he/she is out of the country and try to make you feel better by indicating they are in either Canada or the UK, on business or an employment relocation, or they are in the US military. They will claim the imaginary car they are selling is in a shipper's warehouse being run by eBay or something and is ready to ship. Then comes the obvious scam, asking you for a deposit, etc..
Be careful out there.
