Default Service Bulletin 00-054

Just bought my S2K 2 months ago (00 with 25590 miles now) and noticed a groan noise from the engine while decelerating in 2nd and 3rd gears between 3000-4000RPM. I did not really pay it too much attention since this is my first performance car. I thought maybe it was normal. Found Service Bulliten 00-054 in the FAQ section of this site and it matched my symptoms to a tee. I took it to the dealer and test drove the tech with me. Before the test drive I showed him a copy of the bulletin. During the test drive he told me it was an exhaust rattle and said they could fix it today. They offered to drive me home, but I declined and waited the 3 hours for them to tighten every bolt to heat shields and exhaust system. After they test drove it again, they decided the noise is what the bulliten describes. To make a long story short, they are replacing my clutch as the bulliten says to. Anyone out there with the factory warranty still in effect, this is a good way to get a new clutch
They ordered the parts and I should have my clutch replaced on Monday.

My dealer originally told me to live with it as long as possible an that they would replace it whenever I wanted up until the warranty period expired. I really tried, but at 13k, I HAD to take care of it. Now, at 26k, a new part has revised that TSB, and I am thinking again about replacing my now-rattling clucth again. At least I keep getting new clucthes right?

McNatt Honda in Lewisville had stated that they would not do the TSB. I found the noise to be annoying and had wanted it fixed. Just got off the phone with Honda Cust. Serv. and they got with McNatt to do the TSB. Will keep you posted on the results.

I believe I am experiencing this on my 01 as well. I'm going to listen closely tonight. In fact, I have an errand to run soon so I might check it out then. I thought it might be "clutch chatter" but I don't see how my clutch could be glazed (I never drop it, I always launch smooth).

"Gear backlash" is when a gear falls back over the length of the "play" between teeth and strikes the opposite side, right? Is there any harm to this other than the noise?

Sorry it took so long to get back to everyone....but I took the car in that monday to get the clutch replaced. I called the next day to see when it would be ready. They evedenty got my car confused with another because the guy told me they were putting the XMSN back in as we spoke. My wife went to pick it up on her way home from work and they told her it was not ready because they had to order a part. To make a long story short...The kit they ordered did not come complete, then once it was ready (on Thurs) the service manager did not think they fixed the problem and wanted another test drive on Fri. They called me in on Fri to test drive it with the service manager. She thought it was still making the noise. I dove it with her and it sounded GREAT. She was trying to hear a noise that was not there and I could have had my car back Thurs afternoon. IDIOT!!! Anywho, I did get a free oil change out of it for their incompetence.

I am getting the work done tomorrow.

I am a little confused? Do they replace the whole clutch? pressure plate, etc or just the disc? What about the flywheel?

I got that done as well as the 1-2 grind. I've been driving for about 1200 miles and it seems to be working great. But I've also had the window fixed twice already, hope this one lasts...
