Default Service Bulletin 00-054 (noise when decelerating)

Hi Guys, this is only my second or third post in over 2 years (Nov 99) of S2k ownership, although I read the board every few days, honest! That was when "Chris" plagued us on an almost daily basis, remember?

Now with just over 15k miles on the car I've noticed an increase in clutch/trans noise and my local dealer agrees but says that doing 00-054 will not have a significant effect (they claim we don't have anything like the noise of some of the cars they see!!)

So to all the guys (and Gals) out there that have had this done what have been your experiences so far?

The dealer thinks I might not want to do something so intrusive for such little gain.

Thanks Everybody

I haven't actually had the part replaced, but the Honda dealership thinks that the noise will be corrected by the replacement. I think that I'd be willing to try b/c that noise is really bad when going down hills

Just because your car is not as noisy as some others does not mean that the problem cannot be remedied with the TSB-054 fix. The new part they are replacing with (part number ends in -054) seems to last longer than some of the previous fixes. All these fixes lasted for awhile, but some made the clutch louder overall, but reduced the buzzing. The newest part is supposed to fix it but it has been reported that the buzz came back on at least one car. You may want to wait a little more unless the noise is unbearable. Besides, why not do the replacement at 35k? then you basically got a free 35k out fo the clucth, and its still covered under warranty.

I had it replaced on my '00 at 13,000 miles. The dealer was mostly inept and I had to take it back three times. In the end the noise is noticeably better.

Watch out though! They have to loosen a bolt around the steering rack. Ocean Honda forgot to tighten it. I argued with the service manager and technician for days about the vague steering and darty behavior. Their top mechanic said I was being too sensitive and didn't know what I was talking about.

They called into their tech support and were told to look into the bolts that hold the steering rack in place. It was a very dangerous condition, especially if I were to push it into a turn.

Some dealers have very little experience with this service bulletin. Find one that had done a few.

Keep in mind that people only post when they have problems with their car and service. I fo one, had an awesome expererience even though my car was the first this dealership did. Their master tech took extra time to do things right, and they even left my car on the lift over the weekend so that nobody could get to it until I picked it up. If you let comments made on a board where many people come to find solutions when they have problems scare you off, you'll really be missing out!

(Besides 350Z will be a first year model from Nissan...do you want to go through a new learnig curve? BMW 's are pretty nice sedans, but it is NOTHING like the S2000 driving experience)

My advice to any S2000 owners is to find a good dealership that has good staff, talk to the master tech that will be working on the car and talk to him/her as well. I realise some areas in the country may not have any good honda dealers, in which case you should contact AHM to address that concern.

I have this deceleration noise from time to time. I think it's part of the car's character, and I just leave it alone. It's too risky taking the car in for service, and this noise only comes around every so often.

I had the buzzing with only 7K mi. sometimes so bad I wouldn't downshift at all. Sounded like I was driving some pos Suzuki. Just had the clutch disk replaced and coudln't be happier with the results. Entirely different feel, sound (no buzzing at all, just nice growl)... much better. I suggest you go for it. This is the second redesign for this problem and they (Penske Honda, Indianapolis) said they are very happy with it. So am I.

How many miles have you been driving since the sound started?

This noise started on my car right around 13k miles; when I learned of the bulletin, I figured I would just wait and combine the clutch work with the 15k service.

Well, it is 1000 miles later and the noise is much more irritating; there is no question in my mind that I am going to get the work done.

If you haven't driven many miles since it started, give it some time - it might start driving you crazy too
