Default Shift Knob Won't Unscrew

Hey Guys,

New to the forum, love my S and did a search. I just got the TWP performance weighted type R knob in stainless. A very nice piece of work indeed. Anyway my happiness quickly has turned to frustration as I have not been able to remove the stock knob. It is aluminum with the 6 speed pattern on it so looks stock. Anyway it wont budge and neither will the lock nut underneath it. I tried with correct size open end wrench as instructions say but all it does is twist the black metal shaft until I get scared something is gonna break and I back off. I don't want to break anything in the shift mechanism. For reference its twisting about 1/4 inch to-almost 1/2 inch. Any suggestions would be much appreciated as I really really want to install y new part. If it makes a difference I tried the install while the car was very warm including the stick as it was sitting in the sun all day until I got home from work.

The only thing I can say is to keep trying to remove the lock nut. Try getting a hammer and tapping the end of the wrench. You want impact, not just strong.

Maybe a dumb comment, but don't forget that righty-tighty, lefty-loosey is backwards as the nut spins up into the knob. You'll need to push clockwise to loosen the locknut.

first thing to come to my mind also

so you are rotating the knob counterclock wise

and the lock nut clockwise, right?(since it's up side down)

No I tried to rotate knob counter clockwise lefty loosy. I was trying the same with the lock nut. So your saying I need to start with the lock nut and go clockwise? Man I have been working on cars for a while, this is embarrassing. I have a feeling either way I try its stuck lol, but let me go out and check.

You have to turn the nut and knob opposite from each other if you want them to separate....

Wow so you guys came through for me, it was the righty tighty to loosen the locknut that worked, popped off in a second. Thanks for coming to the rescue, I will take pics of the new knob in a few.

Imagine that you cut off your entire shift lever and were looking down the cut lever to the knob. Which way would you turn the nut? That's lefty loosey... it's reversed if you're looking at it from the knob down....
