Having been a member of this board from the beginning, I've observed and participated in the many threads and posts about shift knob options, which seem to keep growing, but in the end, don't offer much more than was the case when the board was started. I thought it might be helpful to new members to start a thread that explained, from my point of view, the most desirable options, and let others expand the thread based on their own experiences and preferences.

First, there's the stock choice: aluminum or the optional titanium. While there are slight differences in shape and appearance, the fundamental difference is heft, with the titanium scaling in at about double the weight of the stock aluminum. Pictured below are the stock and titanium knobs. Since I despise chrome looking or extremely shiny items in the interior, both have been extensively burnished with 4X steel wool, which give them a very fine satin sheen. Most users prefer the titanium because the extra weight is believed to make shifting even easier on an already amazing short-throw gearbox. In the photos below, the aluminum are always on the left.

Rick,
Great job, as usual, in summing it all up. I still have the 2001 stock knob but have heard great things about the voodoo. However, for some reason I feel guilty about getting rid of the one that came with my S2K. Who knows, maybe one day I'll bite. But nevertheless thanks for the great summation.

I've kept my stock knob handy and now and then I put it back on, just for old time's sake

After much deliberation I've decided I like the shape of the original aluminium one and it looks great in the car.
It's marked up from the ring on my left hand. I may enquire about getting a polishing shop to buff them out. Having said all of that, I like the round Voodoo one too. I think the matt one with the red 'S2000' lettering around 'The equator' ... looks really smart!

I like them both but I think the shape of the original shifter suits the car better.

I have the MOMO Carbon Fiber. Fits great, stays tight and is very light. Looks great.

Thanks for a great post. I wouldn't mind a bit shorter throw, but I grasp the gear lever round the side (different sides depending what shift I'm making), so the original shape suits me better. I might look for an replacement that's shaped like the original, but sits lower like the Voodoo - seeing the pictures has helped show the difference!

Thanks!

-Brian.

Airgate, no, because it is cheap. Manufacturers use vinyl precisely because it is cheap. If you buy Honda's vinyl cover separately it costs about $300, and it probably costs Honda less than $25 to make it. Honda's has a foam backing to give the thin vinyl some bulk. Ours is double stitched, Honda's is single stiched with a lapped (read cheap) seam. And ours costs $150 less BTW, the market for our console cover hasn't been effected much at all, because people are buying our cover to cover the Honda vinyl one and there are still hordes of 2000 and 2001 owners without them. If Honda cuts into our market, more power to them. It'll be a sign that AHM has learned something.

I prefer the look of the titanium Voodoo knob, mainly because IMO the alumnium color is so light it looks out of place.

When I took the titanium knob to the shop to be etched this morning, the told be it would have to be sand-etched to cut through the harder titanium. They're going to leave the masking on so I can drop red paint into the etched out logo. Won't have it back for two weeks, though .
