Does it smooth out once the car warms up?

2 things i've noticed:

The car has to be nice and warmed up before any of the shifting is smooth.

secondly, I have to pull the shifter straight down to make it a smooth shift. If i'm sort of pulling it left while i'm pulling it down it is quite clunky. This took a bit of getting used to since i'm so used to holding it to the left while pulling down like I do in my Integra.

The shifter in this car is amazing and practically shifts itself once you're used to it. To practice, shift only using your finger tips. Dont wrap your hand around it, and dont use any muscle grease. Just flick it into gear with the tips of your fingers - it will go right in.

That's right, it doesn't take much to change gears. There's no need to fist the shift knob and yank it; a simple push/pull (depending on where you're going) with a little lateral movement (if needed, 2-3, 4-5) will get the job done.

Also, as stated above, the gearbox won't feel smooth until it's warmed up (usually around 5-10 miles for me, depending on ambient temperature).

Since it is a 2005 I am thinking it is the clutch delay. I get it on my 04. I drove a friends 01 and it was MUCH smoother. The clutch delay allows the clutch to slip, which can be what's causing it. I definitely plan on changing it out, because it is annoying as hell.

My 2005 is one week old and not yet past the break-in mileage. I noticed the same thing with shifting into second gear. It's a little stiff until the transmission warms up. It seems more sensitive than the other gears to getting the correct match between engine RPM and vehicle speed.

I just started a thread on occasionally grinding when I'm trying to do a hard shift from 1st to 2nd, even when the tranny is warm. I never "miss" a gear in any of other gears. What is up with this tranny and 2nd gear?!?! Mine's an '05 too.

2 common transmission problems on my 05.

1. when at idle and at a stoplight or somewhere, if I press in the clutch all the way and shift into first sometimes there's a "clunk" or "thud" that shakes the entire car
2. cold weather its difficult to shift into 2nd while moving, sometimes (rarely) grinds.
