Default Shift at rev limiter

Should I wait until the rev limiter hits before I shift to maximize its speed? And if I do this often, would it be bad?

Thanks,

Tim

you want to time your shifts to shift JUST before you actually hit the rev limiter.

hitting the rev limiter is not generally harmful, hence the reason it is there, to prevent the engine from going into a mechanical overrev. but if you do it enough and too often you could cause some damage. i believe it mostly has to do with the piston/rod deceleration rate that occurs when you hit the rev limiter.

Don't quite understand what your asking but you don't have to wait till it hits the limiter to shift.

Normal driving, you shift whenever the hell you want. If your asking about maximizing vtec then the limiter will blink just before the cut off. If your really good you can shift after the first couple blinks, otherwise shift just before.

That's the purpose of the rev-limiter........to prevent damage. Shifting before will not hurt anything....

You have to anticipate the rev limiter a bit so that you let the rpms get as high as possible... Like you have to have your mind ready and mentally begin shifting BEFORE rev limiter...

If you actually hit rev limiter you are actually slower than you could be. Just think about it, if you hit rev limiter and THEN shift, your car will lose momentum and at the same time lose a good amount of speed... which then means you'll be at a lower RPM in the next gear meaning you will be at less power for longer...

Get what I'm saying?

And TECHNICALLY hitting rev limiter should NOT* damage anything, but its not really a nice feeling (in my opinion)...

Just practice and you'll get it down... You'll be letting the engine rev all the way up, but you won't be hitting redline, you'll automatically be shifting BEFORE the rev limiter kicks in and slows you down...

Have fun, be careful, and drive safe...

technically hitting the rev limiter shouldn't do damage.

but if you do it enough or too often, damage can occur. and again, i want to say this has something to do with pisont/rod deceleration at the rev limit.

Depending how the rev limiter works the engine could be running very lean when it kicks in. I'd try to avoid hangin out against the limiter. A shift in the flashes before it kicks in if you can, obviously once it does kick in it certainly wasn't the fastest way through the gears.

I believe our rev limiter works by randomly cutting out the ignition spark.

when we are redlining, our cars are running quite rich. (11.5:1)
