Default Shifting

What rpm do most people shift for daily driving? If I shift below 6k the gears feels like they are grinding. The best explanation is it feels like the pins moving when you put a key into a lock and turn slowly. Some people said it is the cyncros but I don't know. When I shift around 6k it feels smooth. The only reason I ask is because I was told to shift at 6 or higher because thats where the powerband starts; while others have said to shift around 3.5-4.

Muraenidae,

I know exactly what you are talking about. My shifts are smooth as butter when they're done above 6000 rpms. But for everyday driving, at around 4000 rpms (as recommended in the manual), the shifts can be a bit notchy.

I've found the best solution for me is to apply pressure to the shifter before I dip the clutch, and shift very quickly. I attribute this quirkiness to the fact that at low RPMs, there is a less of a difference in tranny shaft speeds between gears.

HTH.

I shift at around 2k-3k...

It's smooth as long as you can shift fast (or slow) enough to keep the RPMs the same for the next gear. (Tons of practice for this)

I still can't heel-toe.

I shift around 3K for daily driving. I dont know what ya'll talkin about, everytime I shift the car is smooth as hell. I always keep the RPM low, even from a dead end stop or reverse. Saving gas ain't easy

Murae- I've only owned my S2K for about 3 months, so I've had some time to investigate this much talked about "grind" issue. The S2K is easy to grind, but on the other hand, easy NOT to grind. I've found that by using NEAT shift patterns you can avoid any grinding. Square the patterns off, don't cut any corners, if you know what I mean. This car won't handle sloppy shifting. From 3 to 2, come straightdown to mid point, and then straight left horizontal all the way to the stop, then straight down into 2nd. I've found by doing that, the gear box in this car is VERY smooth. TRy it, see if it doesn't help you. I think after a while, neater shift patterns will become 2nd nature to you. Everyone complains about the dreaded 3 to 2 downshift, but shifting neatly it is as smooooooth as hot butter (whatever that means). Hope this helps, and I'm not implying you're a sloppy shifter. Could be part of the problem, though. Good luck....
