Default Shipping my car to the Caribbean?

Has anyone ever shipped their car to the Caribbean? If so, what company, how much, how long, where from and to, etc.

I know someone who had shipped a car from FL to Puerto Rico. I was working in San Juan for a 4 months last year and had heard it mentioned a few times. I believe she paid somewhere around $3500 to have the car shipped (don't know if that's just for shipping, or if it includes the packing charges. . . do cars even get "packed" when being shipped?). Anyway, I think the shipping charges are based in part on the total value of the car. Cars are taxed pretty heavily in certain places, and you may have to pay the tax in order to import the car. This was an early 90's Accord that was shipped.

Where in the Caribbean are you going? I have a feeling Puerto Rico may be cheaper than other islands, only because it's a U.S. Commonwealth and a major port.

Good luck.

Buy a motorcycle with the shipping money while you are there instead. Then you solve the problem of the roads and the care/parking of your car

St Maarten could work out OK from a driving point of view, I think, nasti. I'm not sure if you'll run into customs trouble... If it were USVI or Puerto Rico, that'd be different because they're US territory.

Good luck with your plans. Keep us posted.

Are you going to Med school over there? AUC?

My ex went to the carrebeans for med school and from what I've heard, it's pretty uncivilized but I know that AUC is more developed than other areas: fast food, clubs, etc. I would not bring my S2k there for security reasons. I'm guessing that the native people would probably do something to such a nice car over there, steal it, steal the seats, etc. Plus some roads over there are pretty rough and you'll end up screwing up your car. Import taxes are horrendous and if you are going to med school...you'll be burdened with so much school work that you won't have time to drive the S.

I'd hate to see a fellow S get trashed

EDIT: I just found this on Ross's discussion board:
